Re: Nintendo Press Conference: Stream & Discussion
Gamers are biased. Not a good judge. 360 owners watch PS3 expecting to be convinced on why they should buy one, a PS3 owners watches it to see what's coming up for their system. Future may look good to someone who owns a PS3, but to a 360 owner, there's nothing worth writing home about. Goes every which way with that.
Regardless, no one can deny the numbers MS put up. Shall we take a look at the highlights?
Since the release of PS3 and Wii... - 18 3rd party Xbox 360 games have been in the top 10 sales charts
- No Wii or PS3 3rd party games have ever made it in the top 10
- Xbox has nearly double US hardware sales as PS3, and is only 100,000 shy of Wii
- Xbox 360 has sold more games than PS3 and Wii combined.
- 2/3 of all 3rd party titles sales are on Xbox 360.
- Half of all consumer spending is on Xbox 360
Amazing. If I was a publisher, all my games would be going to 360. It's just like PS2 last gen.

Re: Nintendo Press Conference: Stream & Discussion
I don't think that is a fair assessment. The 360 is a couple years old, Wii and PS3 haven't even hit their first birthdays.
Although, Since sony is after the same market segment as 360, they are going to need a miracle to pull this one off. In that respect, same as PS2, as in, the headstart paid off big time.
However, with the ps2, the graphics sucked compared to the xbox. This time round, the xbox 360 has as good, and more often BETTER graphics than ps3.
combined with price, and the rest... things aren't looking good for sony.
Someone tell me 3 good reasons to buy a ps3 over an xbox360.

It isn't really fair at all, MS can gloat about all the numbers they want, but eventually Sony and Nintendo are going to eat at their share of the market. 360's had two holiday seasons, the competitors have had one... things will get more clear when Sony and Nintendo reach their 3rd and 4th holidays.
Xbox 360 is being outsold by Ps2 at the moment. That should speak for itself. There is a HUGE amount of gamers out there who haven't bought anything this gen yet.
Nobody's crazy enough to go out on a limb and say Sony will beat microsoft in the end with how the market is laid out now, but I can tell you now that its far from over.
As for for your 3 reasons.. though it may not apply for everyone:
1) If you're an RPG fan, Ps3 is the safest buy. SE will possibly make RPGs for 360, but they are guaranteed to make them for Ps3.
2) Ps3 is just outright better hardware. More game potential, andmuch better built. No ring of death! Free online anyone? Blu-ray player and wireless internet without paying hundreds of dollars for add ons?
3) Any my personal reason, MGS4 >_> When it was announced that it was exclusive for Ps3 I saw a lot of people across a lot of message boards say "****, I have to buy a Ps3 now". Fun stuff.
Those aren't the only reasons, but it is a worthwhile system...
I assume Next year they'll probably have somewhat similar info but they may take Wii out of consideration as competition (since Wii will pass up 360 sometime this year). Then the year after who knows lol

1) Better tech
2) HD movies
3) You'll still be playing it past 2010
I'm trying to stay away from game exclusives because you'd most likely say "I prefer the exclusives on 360 or Wii", but lots of people would disagree. On top of that, Sony hasnt really appealed to a lot of...GameTavern members. They did just fine not selling a PS2 to a bunch of...GameTavern members.

Re: Nintendo Press Conference: Stream & Discussion
1) Better tech --- newer, im not so sure better though.
2) HD movies ---- this is a very valid and good point.
3) You'll still be playing it past 2010 --- not unless sony picks up thier game and starts doing a lot better.
as a fan of the ps2, i loved my ps2 so much i said many times ps3 is baught on launch, how could they go wrong?
well, they found a few ways to do that.
as of right now i'd prefer a 360, and i never liked the xbox at all, and have always hated microsoft in general.
and one by one, sony keeps letting exclusive games slip right out of thier hands.
so still be playing it past 2010? im not entirely sure of that at this point.

Re: Nintendo Press Conference: Stream & Discussion
It's better tech. Not only has it proven to be FAR more reliable, but I'd be willing to bet we'll be seeing a noticeable gap in exclusive game performance between 360 and PS3 by 2009 and beyond. Sony has proven that they design hardware that is a little ahead of its time and pays dividends all the way throughout the hardware lifecycle (perfect example is PS2. compare God of War 2 to early PS2 titles, and then compare Halo to any of the late XBox titles). On top of that, it's wireless out of the box, hard drive is included and developers can utilize that, and it has compatibility with more formats.

Cell hasn't exactly impressed like it had promised, and the VRAM in PS3 leaves a lot to be desired. Microsoft designed Xbox around PC hardware which was familiar to developers, which is why Xbox looked good on day 1, and still looked good on its death bed.
Sony continues to design hardware requiring complex code, and redesigning engines. That's poor engineering. Sony got away with it last gen because they had the numbers, people had no choice but to take the time to learn the system. That's not a factor this time around. Ps3 doesn't have the install base, and has already shown plenty of signs of poor design. Even if it's not the most powerful hardware, it's running better software, and has a much better SDK.

Re: Nintendo Press Conference: Stream & Discussion
On the SDK thing - holy mother of god. PS3 is the most frustrating dev kit ever.
Xbox SDK is great. PiX, which monitors framerate and performance, Watson, which logs game code useful for developers, DVD emulation, video capturing, and hell, debug menus come up right away. You load your build on to the xbox's developer hard drive, and you play it.
PS3 SDK is completely different. Performance stuff? Code that **** yourself. DVD emulation? Hah, you can either run a build off a computer hard drive, or burn a DVD every time, which gets costly. Debug menus? They take 10 seconds to come up, because it's not stored locally. Screenshots? Video? No. Sony hasn't even bothered.
The only thing the PS3 SDK has going for it is the logging software, and that's about as standard as it gets.
It has some powerful gears in there, but damn, there's no way anyone can expect to develop easily with that thing.
