Default Norton SystemWorks

I have an older PC (3 years old, at least and one of those abhorrent RIMM dependent Dells at that) and while I take care of it and clean it up regularly my registries were screwed. My PC chugged like mad. Well, when I upgraded my anti-irus this month, Norton was giving away their systemworks software with it.

Its great.

It cleaned up my registries and automatically cleans all temporary materials and un-needed crap daily. My Dell whizzes by now and my MMO's (especially WoW) are playing 10 times more smotthly with more graphical upgrades than I usually use.

I know this sounds like a commercial, but I've never been so happy with a product. If you have an older PC and download/delete/download on it a lot, GET THIS. It really works.

I use the freeware program CCleaner for registry stuff, which I don't do a lot, as I have a theory that deleting too much stuff can mess with that day's restore checkpoint. I try to keep my PC clean, I honestly format maybe every 3 or 4 years. But it's probably a good idea to format more often. If I do decide to update my virus scanner maybe I'll snag Norton and give their systemworks a run. Sounds like a pretty nifty program.

Theres many cleaners like that. many free, and it is a good idea to use them or keep it clean yourself, because a cleaner system runs much better.

as for norton tho, i'd never use norton (or mcafee) anything. i'd use another, preferably free one. But still, program like that is a good thing to have.

So what free ones are effective as Norton?

I have the McAfee suite right now. It comes free to download for Comcast users.

I love Systemworks. It's the bomb-diggity. Running Windoctor for the first time is quite the eye-opener.

One I just found about (and worked very well) is http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

And thank the gods for it. It found stuff that my Norton virus scan and Ad-Aware didn't find, including some kind of spyware or virus that kept minimizing my games right in the middle of them, driving me mad and sending my computer into convulsions if the game was particularly tasking.

I feel so much cleaner now. It's like cleaning behind that dresser or bookcase that's been sitting there for years -- you find bugs you didn't know existed.
