Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
I know this will just be tossed aside, because hell, who takes anything I say and actually reads it.
But the Revolution (I'm so not using the new name until its released) controller is too kitcsh-y for me.
Nintendo has always tried to change the market, and it hasnt gone so well.
They wanted to be the first to use discs, and in return, created their number one competator.
They made the Superscope, and we all know how widely those type of things are used in next-gen systems.
They made the power glove, and hell, every system wants a power glove add-on now.
They had a DDR-esque mat you can use, instead of a controller. And now every system is jumping on that bandwagon, arent they?
The Super Gameboy? "Yeah, lets make an add-on cartridge where kids can play 8-bit games on a 16-bit system." And someone along the line shouted "BRILLIANT!"
I just think the Nintendo Revolution will be awkward, and kitcshy, and only the fanboys will love it and be all "Omg teh nintendo is teh awesome, YAY CONTROLLER!"
But I see it as highly non-practical. Yes, it would be good for shooter games. But is Nintendo only looking to corner the 80's arcade style market?
I dont see a bunch of 6 year old kids crammed into a bedroom all flinging their arms around wildly and frequently to throw a baseball, and hit the ball, then run to get it, and throw it to a base, while another kid flings his arm to slide into 3rd, while the other kid whips his arm to throw the ball, as a good thing.
I see it as completely bad for any sports, or racing game. It's an excellent idea for arcade games, because it caters directly to that.
Also, how many kids will be able to enjoy hours upon hours of endless funm with games they love, when their arms get tired?
I'm not saying it's a bad idea. Because it's good for certain styles of games.
But it's one of those "We're Nintendo, and we need to revolutionize the market" risks that they take every so often, that havent seemed to do so good for them.
Actually wait, they've done excellent. Every system wants a Controller pad, Superscope, and powerglove.
I just see this as really kitsch, like I said. To me, this would be like Sony implimenting the Dance Pad for every game for the PS3. It's new, it's edgy, it's never been done.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
In response to previous post on previous page:
Er, they made first use of the D-pad, shoulder buttons, the best wireless controller to date, began and dominated portable gaming, and continued with the monsteriously successful DS which everyone ratted on for being a gimick.
They try out all gaming possibilites. Some work, and some don't. I see this as one of the former...but only time will time.
Crap name though.

I like it. I told my guild on WoW, they thought it was weird but nothing shocking.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
i wouldnt say the DS is doing 'monsteriously' seccessfull by any stretch of the imagination. its doing well. had its ups and downs and is picking up more and more. but monsteriously? come on now. lol
and the DS itself wasnt what people called a gimmick, it was one feature of it. which was being just that untill they stoped trying to force the feature into every little bit. once they relaxed a bit and used it just for what it would help with, it became a much more usefull feature.
note, i didnt read back to know what your responce is to, so im not taking sides on any of what you already said.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
By monstrous I obviously was referring to the little gremlins that reside in each system increasing their likelihood for a synchronized take over of the human race.
But has been the top selling system in Japan for quite a whiles now. Not sure about the rest of the world. Based on everyone's first impressions of it, it's doing a hell of a lot better than predicted. Even Nintendo wasn't sure how it would do marketing it as a third tier. I'm just hoping Nintendo isn't being to cocky now with Rev (dammit, Wii I mean...wonder how long till I get used to it) now that the DS has been embraced so well.
I think Nintendo should have let me name it considering I have a pathological obsession with names. But first I would need a list of materials in the machine, the name of the designer, the name of his pets, the dimensions of every angle and crevice, the exact color of white the system is, the voltage, the time the concept was conceived regarding the controller, etc. and I'd come up with a catchy name with something to back it up with.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
I'd buy it.
And now real people speak out about Wii:
Female, aged 30. From Hong Kong.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: "Wee" (got it first time)
Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: A urinal? Candy? It's kind of trendy, kind of modern. Maybe a trendy urinal? Maybe a sporting goods product? Maybe something that goes fast, like rollerblades? Probably a product for little kid because it's simple and very simplistic.
Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Games are supposed to be complicated. I wouldn't have guessed that.
Male student, aged 19. Savvy gamer from Derby, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Why? or Wee?
Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: Possibly a shower gel or some type of cleaning product.
Q: It's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console.
A: Yeah? But that name doesn't sound anything like a games console!
Female student, aged 19. Casual gamer from Sheffield, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Weeeeeee!
Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: Chocolate.
Q: What would you say if it's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Hmmm, I think it'd sound good as a chocolate bar.
Female student, aged 18. Non-gamer from near Coventry, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.
Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: Nothing. It doesn't sound like a product of any kind.
Q: What would you say if it's the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Oh right, well it sounds a little silly.
Female student, aged 18. Non-gamer from London, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: The same way you'd say why.
Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: A no-name car audio CD player.
Q: What would you say if it's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Wiierd.
Male student, 18. Savvy gamer from Norfolk, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.
Q: Lets say this is a product of some kind. What type of product does it make you think of?
A: A product you say? A physical product, hint hint? Seriously, probably something to do with Wikipedia or some kind of athletics gear.
Q: What would you say if it's actually the name of Nintendo's next-generation games console?
A: Grrreat! [pronounced in a heavily sarcastic manner]
Male student, 19. Casual gamer from Lincoln, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.
Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: Japanese? It sounds small, maybe a gadget.
Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Yeah, that makes sense. It doesn't surprise me.
Male student, 19. Casual gamer from Birmingham, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Like why.
Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: World War II, the name "will".
Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: That's logical, but I think the two letter "i"s make it seem like it's roman numerals.
Female student, 19. Non-gamer from Hull, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.
Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: A cleaning thing.
Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Actually, yeah! That makes sense.
Female student, 19. Non-gamer from London, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Wee.
Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: A cleaning agent.
Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: Uh, it sounds "wampy". Stupid.
Male student, 19. Savvy gamer from Lincoln, UK.
Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A: Like why, I think.
Q: What does this name make you think of?
A: It sounds like a Chinese name or some sort of code.
Q: What if I told you it's for a games product?
A: I'd associate it with Wifi or a video game, not a console.
