Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
Haha nice, Crash. Did you make those yourself?
The name is a name, I personally don't care what it is, but I do hope it isn't a detriment to getting it out to the masses.
I do, however, like to make fun of it. I think, perhaps, that all the uproar over the name change (see IGN boards and others) is at least getting the word out about it. Perhaps having such a distinct, easy-to-make-fun-of name will be a good thing in the end, a la there is no such thing as bad publicity. Of course, that saying is not always true.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
It's possible they'll change it, but I doubt it. Most of you will probably remember that the Gamecube was called the "StarCube" for about a week. But the uproar they met from forum-goers and the media persuaded Nintendo to change the name to Gamecube.
But by the same token, no matter how much people hate the name, they'll eventually just fall back on calling it a "Nintendo". And honestly I don't think that's such a bad thing.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
Maybe the "wii" name is only for Japan, or Asia?
Because frankly, I cant see anyone saying "Wanna come over and play with my wii?"

It might work in Japan, but I just dont think that name sounds appealing to the rest of the world.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
Well, I don't know what to think after mulling it over.
On one hand.. its Wii
But on the other hand check out IGN, 1up, game forums or whatever you want to do.. top story is Wii...
Why because it got people talking.
I mean blogs from editors from several sites lead back to the Wii story or even more Wii info.
Wii is quickly becoming a household word just because no one can stop talking about it. And for some strange reason that works, I think.
And apparently the name is Wii and not Nintendo Wii which is weird but could work.

OMFG! This is the most creative console name. It makes everything else seem so unfriendly. I definitely see good things happening with this name. I am screaming!
The logo is simple and attractive.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
I know this will just be tossed aside, because hell, who takes anything I say and actually reads it.
But the Revolution (I'm so not using the new name until its released) controller is too kitcsh-y for me.
Nintendo has always tried to change the market, and it hasnt gone so well.
They wanted to be the first to use discs, and in return, created their number one competator.
They made the Superscope, and we all know how widely those type of things are used in next-gen systems.
They made the power glove, and hell, every system wants a power glove add-on now.
They had a DDR-esque mat you can use, instead of a controller. And now every system is jumping on that bandwagon, arent they?
The Super Gameboy? "Yeah, lets make an add-on cartridge where kids can play 8-bit games on a 16-bit system." And someone along the line shouted "BRILLIANT!"
I just think the Nintendo Revolution will be awkward, and kitcshy, and only the fanboys will love it and be all "Omg teh nintendo is teh awesome, YAY CONTROLLER!"
But I see it as highly non-practical. Yes, it would be good for shooter games. But is Nintendo only looking to corner the 80's arcade style market?
I dont see a bunch of 6 year old kids crammed into a bedroom all flinging their arms around wildly and frequently to throw a baseball, and hit the ball, then run to get it, and throw it to a base, while another kid flings his arm to slide into 3rd, while the other kid whips his arm to throw the ball, as a good thing.
I see it as completely bad for any sports, or racing game. It's an excellent idea for arcade games, because it caters directly to that.
Also, how many kids will be able to enjoy hours upon hours of endless funm with games they love, when their arms get tired?
I'm not saying it's a bad idea. Because it's good for certain styles of games.
But it's one of those "We're Nintendo, and we need to revolutionize the market" risks that they take every so often, that havent seemed to do so good for them.
Actually wait, they've done excellent. Every system wants a Controller pad, Superscope, and powerglove.
I just see this as really kitsch, like I said. To me, this would be like Sony implimenting the Dance Pad for every game for the PS3. It's new, it's edgy, it's never been done.

Re: Revolution's New name Revealed
In response to previous post on previous page:
Er, they made first use of the D-pad, shoulder buttons, the best wireless controller to date, began and dominated portable gaming, and continued with the monsteriously successful DS which everyone ratted on for being a gimick.
They try out all gaming possibilites. Some work, and some don't. I see this as one of the former...but only time will time.
Crap name though.

Kaplan responds.

So why announce the name now and not at the show?
By letting the gaming community vent now about the name, they will be less distracted as launch titles for the system are announced and initial reports about what it's like to play the games begin to come in.
