To answer several questions:

I now give a MEGA thumbs up, due to the ginormous soft cast on my thumb. Its really pretty funny to look at.

And no, the thumb is not out of service. In fact most of what I chopped off will grow back as it was soft tissue and not any tendons or musculature. The drawback is that the tip will most likely lose feeling forever.

The bright side is that my state considers this "permanent loss" and while I will only get a few days of comp until I can work again (can't handle knives sans thumb), I am entitled to a one time payout because I lost a part of myself forever. Sweeet... now I'm wondering exactly how much I need my pinky toe...
