Default FCC: TV Gone too Far?

Real World's Rachel Campos speaks out on March 29th of TV going too far. When violence, sexuality, and hate become a clear message on TV these days, she wants the FCC to take action.

"I don't want my 7 year old watching MTV and learning about things she's not ready for!" Rachel Campos stated.

Hal Sparks of Queer as Folk had to say,
"You can't let the government take control of Television. If you don't want your kids seeing that material you don't get it for your TV!"

Rachel Campos replied, "If I want kid shows like Nickolodeon and Disney, I have to order a package that comes with MTV... this has to change!"

As the debate erupted, Donny cut both of them off and cut to a commercial. Some key shows that sparked this controversy was,

Desperate Housewives
Niptuck
The Shield
etc.
What's your thoughts on these guys? Should the FCC regulate the TV even further?

My belief...

This country is based on freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of press. Other countries who don't have nearly as much freedom as we do show Nudity, vulgarity, and violent shows on basic TV however aimed at later hours.

I don't think the FCC should do anything. The parents have a responsibility to police their children and what they watch, especially on prime time. It's not the government's responsibility or FCC's....... FCC is there to deem what is indecent and decent. If the FCC allows it, then you have the authority to police what your children are watching.

If you look at all the restrictive elements in this society, they deal with parents. Labels such as Parentl Advisory: Explicit Content, PG; PG-13 being Parental Guidance, AOL's and other ISP's PARENTAL controls.... they all deal with parents being parents.

So if the FCC allows a show like Desperate Housewives on broadcast channels, parents should take responsibility and make sure their kids don't see it, especially at night.

Any thoughts?

Are kidding me? The foundation of the American social system is based on oppression, and being controlled. Don't kid yourself, America would fall to shambles if people weren't told what they could and couldn't say. Why do you think half-assed systems like the FCC, ESRB and the MPAA are still running strong?

I'm a firm believer that parents like that need to be shot, however I know I'm representing an extreme. The fact of the matter is, until your child is 18, you have control over them. So if you don't want them watching MTV, it's not my mother f*cking job to prevent your kid from watching MTV. That's your job. YOU ARE THE MOTHER F*CKING PARENT. That bitch needs to bite the bullet. She got f*cked, she allowed some male to ejaculate inside her, and she got knocked up. Her kid is her responsibilty. The corporate world should not be responsible for what kids do, at least not in the house anyway. One reason that the MPAA and the ESRB make some sense is that they work in situations were a parent wouldn't have control. But inside the home? That's ridiculous. I don't mind the FCC that much, but if you're going to ban MTV and Desperate Housewives, then we have an issue. Neither are that extreme.

its not hard to block out channels. people are morons.. Just cuz your cable package gives you a channel doesnt mean you have to keep it viewable.

you can even call the cable company and have THEM take a channel out if you dont have anything to block it.

on a side note, The Shield kicks ass.

desperate housewives, eh?

in order to solve a problem that she said about not being able to get a channel without buying a package of channels can be solved by the cable providers being able to sell channels individually and have deals in the forms of packages.

another thing is that parents have to be parents, regular TVs nowa days come with the V-chip...USE IT!...hell, my tv is like 5 years old now and it has a v-chip. and if people have digital cable or satilite , then the box (forgot what it's called) has built in perental control; they can block off channels entirly.

my point is that cable providers and parents both have to do something in order for youth to be safe from content that they shouldn't be exposed to.

if the FCC steps in, it might ruin somethings for kids, but adults wouldn't mind because they could do anything anyway.

TV is a privelidge, not a right. And unless you want to build your own TV and channels, you need to be grateful for the technology that has been given to you and accept government regulation with open arms. People who complain about the FCC are people whose minds have been corrupted as a result of lack of government regulation. If you're tired of hearing people complain about their rights, then let the government regulate your life and we'll take care of your needs.

Government is full of wuss's. Your kids are going to see these things someday. Other countries are much laxer on TV rules which obvously there hasnt been this huge sparking debate in the USA of "OMGWTFBBQ, X Kids in this country see boobies whenever they want and now they are scarred for life"

Well, if you dont like it, dont let your child watch it,

If you dont like your child crossing a busy highway, do you wait for the city to step in, or do you not let your child cross it?

Its people like that, that are ruining it for the rest of us.

Mmm... Hal Sparks

I agree with most arguments here, that parents have the ultimate control over what the kids watch. Say, if something undesirable comes on the telly and you don't want your kids watching them, turn it off and take them out. Go to a park or go for some ice cream. Parents don't spend enough time with their children these days and the kids are left at home with the television and the computer. Back to square one.

I know I sound a bit too idealistic and I know that not every child will choose ice cream over television (or simply, the 'child' is a teenager with a mind of his/her own and will blatantly tell you that "Parks are so not cool anymore, mom!"). In that case, watch the program with them and discuss the issues at hand.

Children should be banned from computers, television, radio, and the phone. Hell, don't let them outside, they might see a raging roadster flip the bird.

What ever happened to 8-year-olds being satisfied with refridgerator cardboard boxes? And what we need is teenagers that are not attracted to the opposite sex. Well, not attracted to any sex at any rate.
