I'm having some serious issues with my PS2...
I receieved my PS2 on Christmas '02. It was bought used, so I don't know what generation it is. It worked well; the only problem I had was that PSX games could not save on PS2 memory cards. I was happy.
Now, February '05, the PS2 decided to crap out on me, or something.
I first began noticing there was a problem about a month or so ago. I would turn on my PS2, with my Final Fantasy Anthology FFVI disc inside, and nothing would load. I opened my disc tray and closed it. The disc loaded.
THen the musical started and I didn't access the PS2 for a while; it went into my brother's room. Just now, however, I took it back and brought it downstairs into the living room. I plugged it in to play and popped in FFVI.
It didn't load. I thought, "Okay," and popped it back in. Still didn't load. I tried a few more times. Got a few more "Disc read Errors."
Switch to the FFV disc. Got a Disc Read Error.
Reached over into a cabinet and pulled out a DVD (Love Actually). Stuck it in. The PS2 didn't even try to load it. I had the "Reading Disc..." message for a split second at the bottom of the screen, then it disappeared. I waited a bit to see if it would load anyway. Nothing happened.
I went upstairs and grabbed Ace Combat 5. Put it in. It loaded. With glee, I took it out and popped back in FFVI. Disc Read Error.
I theorized that something must be up with whatever it is that allows my PS2 to play PSX games and DVD movies. I went back upstairs to grab a few test samples.
I first tried the Final Fantasy Chronicles FFIV disc. Disc Read Error. Next, I did FFVII disc 1. Error. I then tried .hack//INFECTION. It loaded. I put in .hack//LIMINALITY. Nothing; same as with Love Actually.
I then tried Xenosaga and got the same thing I did with the movies. The "Reading Disc..." message for a second or so, then nothing. I then tried my test subjects a few more times with no different results.
So, pretty much, my PS2 will not load PSX games (at least FF ones...). Nor will it read DVD movies (at least the tgwo that I tried, anyway). It also seems to have problems with some PS2 games (or Xenosaga, at least).
Now, I want to play FFVI, so if some help could be given, I would really appreciate it.

Sounds like dust buildup in the PS2. I've heard cases of dust building up below the lens area and causes some problems.
Have you tried a CD/DVD Cleaning disc and seeing what happens then?

Re: I'm having some serious issues with my PS2...
Well, I don't have one, and I won't be able to get one this weekend...
So... Guess I'm out of luck there.
If that is the case, its probably my brother's doing. He likes to keep his games outside of their cases, just lying around and then playing them. Stupid...stupid...

Here you go Link. This article should help you. I had the same problems you are having and I used this method to gain back most of my PS2's functionality. Hope it works for you.

Actually, forget it. Square did issue a warning PR announcement that some of their games would not work with the PS2. FF Anthologies especially, as well as the Greatest Hits version of FFT, and some others.
So it's half Square's fault, and half your laser's fault. Taking compressed air to it isn't a bad idea.

Except that my FFA was working just fine until recently. Plus, how can you explain the PS2 games and DVD problems? I'm checking out the link now. I'll show it to my stepdad...
Thanks ^_^

It was worded very particularily.
"It has come to our attention that some games may experience malfunctions and/or not work on the Sony Playstation 2 Computer Entertainment System."
I don't doubt that it wouldn't work after a while.

Re: I'm having some serious issues with my PS2...
I remember when my first PS2 stopped working. First it wouldn't read blue discs and PS1 discs. Then it stopped reading anything.
I broke down and bought a new one.

Re: I'm having some serious issues with my PS2...
I hope mine wont stop working. I never unplug any of the cords, I never move it around, Its up on my dresser, and I dust it every week. Considering I only use it to wacth DVD's in my room when the lady friends are over, or if I want to watch a movie in my room.
Meh, it wouldnt be a big blow to me if it did satop working, I would just either buy a new one, or buy another DVD player.
I'd probably go with the DVD player.
