You can backup the Steam folder to a couple of DVD's and when you reinstall steam, just copy the files back in.

I really don't like the fact that neither Valve and VU are not commenting on it. I can only hope that it really is coming out this time. I'll probably just get the bronze version, I don't need that extra crap.
