Yeah, this does not follow H.G. Wells' at all. Then again, I red (pun intended) the book in fifth or sixth grade so maybe I've forgotten some. Movies are different from their predecessors, books, because their purpose is to entertain the large masses; not just the small proportion of us literate people who enjoy a good read. That's why fighting scenes are included.
