Like I said, it really doesn't sound like much of a volunteer service or even normal work.
I mean when I volunteered at places, I could come and go as I pleased (but you don't want to, want nice recommandations and sometimes a job in the future).
A place where if your disgruntled and want to leave, but can't do to law isn't volunteer. It isn't exactly right either. Folks should be able to leave on their own free will, but I guess not everything works that way.
