Question I Don't Like Shenmue... Why?

Guys, I have to admit something...

I don't like Shenmue.

I tried, I really did. I put several days into it, and I even took it as a given that it would take a while for me to get into it. I just never did.

The game just progresses too slowly for me. The whole clue discovery sytem is all too formumatic too. "Oh, I don't know, why don't you ask Joe Schmoe... Oh, I don't know, why don't you ask Jane Doe... and so on" It just took to long and seemed uninspired.

Now tell me, am I just not giving this game enought time (I'm 4 in-game days into the game) and it gets better later? Or is this basically it and Shenmue is just not my cup of tea?

Please give me some advice. I don't want to waste my time if I'm not going to like like it at all.

Maybe you should try a little more, but IMO Shenmue is the kind of game you either love or hate.

I rekon you should give it another go a lot of people just walking about are for effect to make you feel it is a living breathing world and are pretty useless, the best place to go is shops or if you get stuck ask the fortune teller. Incidentally whats bit are you stuck on?

I'm not really "stuck" on anything, I'm just getting a little bored running around and asking poeple questions. I'm going to give it 2 more in-game days though, and see whats happenng... and not ask so many random people so many questions

I could understand why someone could get extremely bored of it, but you should play through the whole game before you make a judgement. Everyone complains that the 1st disk is boring and has no fighting, but there's more action later on, especially after you get your job at the Harbor.

Shenmue is a game that you either really love, or really hate. I like it, because it gives me a break from all of these non-stop action games like Devil May Cry and SSB. I like to play all genres depending on if I'm in the mood or not.

Even if you don't like Shenmue you'll probably like ShenmueII, it has a lot more action and extra things to do. That's enough to finish Shenmue since II's digest movie isn't all that good IMO.

And don't worry about pushing yourself to finish it. It'll start to get better near the end of disc1 and really pick up somewhere in disc2. Then you'll remember why you bought it in disc3.

IMO anyway...

Definately try to get to disc 2 by then you will be more interested in the game and if you stick with it till disc 3, you get to ride a motorbike.

I can see how some people can get bored with shenmue, me personally. I was addicted it, and i'm going to do what ever it takes to play shenmue 3.

Shenmue is a very involved game, and has a deep plot, the first game only scratches the surface on the plot. I can see how you get bored with the game, just going round asking people questions all the time. And here everyone ramble on saying the same thing, and not getting anything useful out of them. If i was you, give it some more time. Maybe your expecting to much from the game, and judge it to quickly. Play it until you start to get more into the action. The game starts to get even more interesting when you get to the habour (like someone else mentioned), when you get a job.

I must admit, i found it a little boring at first, but at the sametime i was amazed by the graphics (maybe not the very best now, but when it first came out it was incredable). But i started to get really into the plot, and then the action started. Both the QTE moments, and the times when you fight. If you can get into the game, then theres the sequel for you to get into. Which has even more action. But even after you've experienced some QTE moments and fighting moments. And you really can not get into the game what so ever. Then give up. I feel that most of the people that don't like shenmue, judge it to quickly, and don't give the game a chance. Once you get into the action and get involved in the plot. You become obsessed, and you find yourself buying the little toys and going to the arcade. And practicing in the park to get your moves stats up, and when you learn a new move a practice it. You can't wait to try it out. And you find yourself talking to Nazome (or however you spell her name) all the time, to see if there relationship (Ryo & Nozomes) will go anywhere.
But...thats if you really give the game a chance, don't get me wrong, it can be slow. But very very addictive, before you know it you'll through each disc and thirsty for the sequel.

Shenume is built for a gamer to understand the environment before the action starts... The first disk is like a training mode, you learn how to use your notebook, and you learn how to use things and talk to people and listen.

on the second disk, you sneak, and learn how to investigate without talking.... but it adds a lot of action.

I'm stil on the second disk, so I'm not gonna read any other posts

you should go at least 10 days before you quit all together... the first disk was kinda funny to me

It is. And you can import from Europe or Japan so its not as bad as some people seem to make it out.
