I saw it in a movie... That's just another jump out at you thing... only it does it with sounds only and the screen flashes too, right? That's sorta like the noises in Silent Hill that come from nowhere... only in Silent Hill, they're meant to come from nowhere.... "People are afraid of what they can't see" or whatever the hell that lead developer dude said
