I can just imagine the geniuses over at Sega:

Sega Head: "How can we further destroy the Sonic series?"
Sega Grunt: "Well, we can get rid of Sonic completely."
Sega Head: "Good, good."
Sega Grunt: "And replace him with Shadow. Since he's evil and all. "
Sega Head: "Indeed, kids today love evil."
Sega Grunt: "They also love guns."
Sega Head: "That is true. An evil version of Sonic wielding a gun? That's a stroke of genius. Never before has there been a game starring a fuzzy animal with a gun. This game idea is overflowing with uniqueness!"
Sega Grunt: "And I suppose at some point Rouge the Bat can show her boobies."
Sega Head: "Add a lesbian kiss with Amy and we have Game of the Year on our hands."

*sigh* At least the GBA games are decent.
