Times have not become more violent. They have just become more televised.

Re: Quotes: Agree or Disagree
Agree... Unless maybe you take population growth into consideration... Then I might have to get back to you on that one... *strokes chin*
Is this in reference to more "civilized" (overall) nations, or the world in general?
Is this a trick question?

Re: Quotes: Agree or Disagree
Disagree...
With Technology comes violence. Extreme Example WMD. Give me a time in History when anything ever compared to Nukes.
In the 21st century, according to The Economist magazine, one out of every eight countries around the world is fighting a civil war. And do you really think that this stat is true because there is TV in this world? Please... that is insane.
Also think back in the 70's and 80's (if you were alive) when you got on a plane, you could take your nail clippers. You didn't have to be phyiscally searched just to get on a plane (metal dectors worked just fine)... your shoes remained on at all times while at the Airport. I'm not saying that there wasn't a threat before that, there were actaully many attacks. But things have gotten worse. Look at Scotland Today. If you don't know what I'm talking about watch CNN or MSNBC.
I think that TV helps spread the fear of Violence. Just my two cents.

But are we talking about actual application of violence, or the simple fact (that we all know) that technology technically makes it possible to kill more people in an easier fashion than we could a thousand (or even a hundred) years ago?
I'm not very well learned, I decided my school time would be better spent staring at the wall, but I do believe nukes have rarely rarely rarely ever actually been used against people...

And there would be some out there who could argue that that's all attributed to paranoia, which is much easier spread thanks to the wonders of television, and more recently the 24 hour news networks...
"Someone brought nail clippers onto a plane! Bump the country's terror alert up to 'High (Orange)'!!!"
I myself have never flown, and seem to have the ability to shrug off any serious situation and go back to my nice starin' wall, content in my relative indifference... So *shrug*

Re: Quotes: Agree or Disagree
Hmm, I'd have to disagree.
Things like Columbine shooting have been largely argued to have been influenced by violent video games and Marilyn Manson music (the latter not belonging to the televisual realm).
And then we have things like videos being posted online of a woman in high heels crushing a puppy's head and a cat's head . And all those terrorists video recording the people they behead. People would not have the same motivation to do these things if they could not easily broadcast it worldwide. The woman in high heel seeks to anonymously shock, disgust, and enrage viewers with her animal cruelty. Something she couldn't do without the televisual medium. And the terrorists seek to deliver a intimidating message in a way that is much more powerful than that through just a photograph or audio recording.
The ability to broadcast to the masses whether through online facets such as YouTube or simply sending your videos to a television network to be broadcast worldwide (like the Virginia Tech killer did) enables and thus encourages those with violent tendencies to act upon them.

You're right, nobody killed anybody until television came around, especially religious extremists...
Until television and potty-mouth music came around, nobody acted out of greed or jealousy... We, as a people, had few true emotions... And boy, the world sure was a swell place!

It doesn't really matter how many times it has been used... but it has been used. And the aftermath was devastating. Also, we didn't stop with just the size of that bomb, we made ones that are bigger. I've actually learned the the US has a Nuclear Weapon so big that it could tilt the world. Why would we need something that LARGE?
Humans came up with another WMD, back in 2003 or 2004 that had the same kill radius as a Nuke, but no Fallout. For the life of me, I can't remember what this thing is called. Sorry.
Also lets go into NBC... Nuclear, Biological, Chemical. One Word "EVIL". And I know that most of the stuff that I'm getting into really belongs in WAR and only WAR. But the technology is out there and it doesn't.
As humans, over thousands of years we have gotten efficient at killing each other and each time we learn something new, it get much more cruel.

And with extreme paranoia comes violence... in which you could say that TV is at fault for the more violent behavior today.
I'm not saying that our past was all flowers and butterflies. It hasn't. If you believe in some type of religion, there is enough killing there to make you sick. If you don't believe in the bible, there is also just the history of the world... Romans! They were a world power. By no means has this world been a paradise for humans.
I'm not even going to get into some of the stories of pure evil that I have personally experienced. There is a lot of violence in this world, it is being broadcast because that helps the ratings. But I really believe that things are worse in recent history then they have been.
But let me end with this, how many of you guys lock yours doors at night? Or even lock your car door... even if you are in it?

I never said that. I said television has encouraged and increased violent tendencies.
Go dish me up some ice cream.

Re: Quotes: Agree or Disagree
I disagree. 3 reasons.
- Because of TV (and internet), people get more sick ideas. Violence spreads through the telly. (Go ahead and flame me for this.)
- What Crash says: more advanced technology causes more and worse violence. It's only logical.
- I forgot my third reason. But I'm sure it was a good one.

I wish you hadn't told me that story about the woman in high heels.
