I wouldn't say it's an issue with self-esteem. With Nintendo, I realize many people are so concerned with how they perform because they wouldn't like a future where Nintendo doesn't exists. They manage to generate profit now, but if they continue to lose ground, there will come a time where it's impossible to pull in enough profit to stay afloat.
Also, with the strong comments from them recently stating that
the day they leave the hardware industry, is the day they leave the gaming industry... that totally rules out a third-party option. So, I think people have good reason to be "emotionaly attached."
