Listen Grim, you did anything but make yourself out to be a weakling. You were in a tight situation and you didn't know what to do and you came here looking for an opinion. I'll tell you what I tell my students about bullies because I've had alot of experience with them (The whole Rugby, Hocky, and Soccer team was after me after they found out I was a black belt in grade 9. Oh, and a very large group of Italians ;) ).
Well anyhow, Xantar couldn't be more right. It's all percieved in how calm you are... it's not really something you can fake though as your emotion does shine through your eyes. As he's talking to you, look at his eyes... don't stare hime down, don't try to look tough, just respect what he's saying. While doing this, try to take note of his stance, where are his legs, his hands, is his head lowered ( headbutts anyone? ), look for bulges in his pockets. Most importantly, try to talk your way out first, fight your way out last.
Don't speak to him as if you are a robot (monotone), just speak as you would to a family member. Ask what the cause of the problem is. If he's unwilling to tell you, and he starts trash talking... keep one foot behind you and slowly turn your body to the side to make yourself less of a target. Just be ready to move out of the way. My advice is to never actually hit him as that would leave bruises and such, leaving you prone to assault charges. Shadow Fox's recommendation of the palm-heel strike to the throat is beautiful as it's rare that will leave a mark.
If he threatens to bring friends, you have to make him regret saying that. If you don't get the chance to and you find yourself in one of these five on one situations, and you know there's no way out think of this. You are probably going down, take out the guy who started it all, and the others will more than likely back off. Show them that even in such low odds, you don't give a ****. You'll earn some of their respect, and thats all you need. If one guy turns to your side, he'll stop the others, trust me. Just take out the original weed.
My incident with the Italians was a follows. This young fellow named Corrado wanted to test me (now I don't know what was going through his mind as I had just finished taking down a 6'7" Rugby player, who by the way ended up being a very close friend of mine after the incident), and as I was walking to one of my classes one day, I felt someone push me. I turned and saw him. I asked what he did that for? He said because he felt like it, and I said At least have the decency to let me face you first. He just looked at me with this puzzeled look as if he didn't understand why I wasn't scared or something. He came to push me again and I let his hands touch my chest, barred his hands to me with my forearm, and turned. I threw him smack dab into the lockers, and I saw he was winded. I heard my friend say "Oh ****". I dropped my bag, and wrapped my thumb and index finder around his laranx, and squeezed. I looked to the side and saw all of his friends looking at me. All of them. I stared into his eyes with a really cold look and asked if it was over... and he noded. I let go, grabbed my bag and walked away. I heard him scream that I better watch my back... I didn't answer back, I knew I didn't have to.
From then on, neither him nor his friends ever bothered me again. Well enough about me. ;)
