Instead they just ran reruns and reality shows, with a few exceptions. Huge mistake, IMO.

I think some networks were planning on doing that, but this writer's strike was just weird.
And it could have also hurt those shows because what if the writer's strike had lasted a month or so. No one knew and it would make it look bad if a show was on for like 2 weeks then suddenly dropped. And also sometimes cable shows are made with a bit more mature audience. Like Dexter was supposed to be shown on CBS but would be editted for a TV audience which would make the show lose some of its charm.
