Personally, I look at that and I think they're trying too hard.

That single advertisement (or any other single advertisement, for that matter) has nothing to do with it.

The actual game is what people are basing Nintendo's image on.

If the game still looks childish -- which it does -- Nintendo's image still looks childish.

I don't think that's entirely true. You'd suprised the affects advertising has on people. Because even though the game is what it is, these marketing people are trying to appeal to an audience through advertising (not just the game).

It's a combination of advertising and the game.

As scary as it may sound, they could make the Teletubbies appeal to 40 year olds............

It isn't so much the mass-public labeling Nintendo as being "kiddie." The gamers are doing that. Primarily people who don't like Nintendo (ie. the PS2 and Xbox fans), but still people who are gaming.

Even if PS2 and Xbox fans don't like Nintendo, they're still playing the games occasionally (with friends and the like), and still seeing pictures and movies of the games on the internet and stuff.

The general public didn't actually give Nintendo the kiddie title, it was the people who were already playing and into the games. For Nintendo to be able to gain new customers (adult ones, that is), they're trying to shake the childish image dumped on them by the current gaming population.

People playing video games are seeing what the actual games look like, and until Nintendo changes that, they're going to be stuck with the "kiddie" image. Once the games stop looking so bright and cartoony, gamers will stop calling Nintendo kiddy-ish (or so Nintendo would hope), and that label will drop, which will help Nintendo introduce their stuff to the consumers currently shrugging them off.

The grown-up advertisements might spark a little initial interest, but once people flip over the box and see the cartoony pictures of the game, they'll figure Nintendo is kiddy-ish, and likely pay them no mind.

Based on that, these ads might get people looking their way to some extent, but the ads alone aren't ever going to free Nintendo from the "kiddie" label it's currently stuck with.

Thats actually pretty good. I think I saw a poster of that in the mall. Anyway, Ive heard the game is pretty good, and that many people expect it to be Mario, and are let down.

Cube-Europe already has a review (Europeans are lucky this time, released earlier here than in US), they say it's a good game, but too short.
Like Luigi's Mansion.

I agree 100%. It all comes down to the content...Games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and Conker were steps (no, STRIDES) in the right direction...unfortunately, they lost Rare...but they continued on with Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime. Although Nintendo seems to want to stick with the 'E for Everyone' titles, I think they really need to use their creative talent to fish into the 'mass market' sea. Super Mario Sunshine or Pikmin 2 isn't going to do that...a cartoon Zelda isn't going to do that. My closest friends are much more casual gamers than myself, and they think Nintendo is a joke for the most part. Amongst 17 year olds and up, most people think that if you want a gaming system, you buy the PS2. Then you have the 20% or so that know as much about XBox and think that it's another option. Gamecube still seems to have that 'kid's toy' image...and Nintendo really needs to drop that if they want to compete. And not just with Gamecube...once the PSP drops, I think that it will have a much less 'kid's toy' image than GBA. And then you have the whole Playstation vs. Nintendo problem all over again.

Well, when the two guys in the batting order in front of you hit back to back home runs like stu and PE just did it's hard to impress but I'm going to try.

I agree with them on almost all of their points but I don't think they're completely taking nintendo's stance into the equation.

I really believe that nintendo doesn't want to be the platform for the mature gamer. They want to be the platform that parents buy for their kids and then they want to grab a small % of the mature gamers.

Nintendo's problem is: Everyone is buying playstations. It started with the psx and really shot through the roof with the ps2. Even the little kid now wants a playstation. Nintendo has always had the 13 and under market and now that they have lost it they desperately want it back.

However, nintendo needs to make up for some of that lost profit, so they develop a few mature games and try and take a % away from sony (and, to a lesser extent microsoft) I really don't think nintendo cares about microsoft at all. They'd be more than content holding the majority of the 13 and under market and then taking whatever they can get of the mature market. Only the loss of the kid market has forced them to aim higher.

you really hit the naiol on the head there stonecutter.

its such a shame that now in this day and age, little kids want mature games so they can brag to there snot nosed frinds about slicing up nazis or shooting zombies or even civilians!

it's such a shame little kids can never truly apreciate the quality they are getting in Nintendo games (kiddy or not they are greatly designed) .

so yeah that may not have been what you were saying but im just adding it

Well, no that's not what I was saying but you make a point anyway.

My point was that the playstation name is so large now that people recognize it as the name for videogames. I'm not saying kids want playstaion so they can play Devil May Cry. Kids just want playstation so that they can have a playstation. Even if it's Jax (Jac? Jak?...whatever) and Daxter that they're playing the fact is. It's playstation.

You also forgot to mention that Nintendo has the hardcore "Nintendo'ers" to impress. Which still seems to work. Now they need to get more "recruits"

so in a way its become the "Coke" of the video game world?
in the sense that parents/kids will say "can i see your Sony games?" when they may mean "i wanna see your gamecube games". Well in a way anyway. It's just become the recognised console that everyone knows of. Well that might not apply the America but its certainly what happens here in Australia.

No doubt, I fully agree with you on that. I don't know about other countries, but here in the U.S, the name "Playstation" gets everyone's attention.
