Dead or Alive movie

I'm sorry to all you DOA fans out there, but the idea of a movie based on the DOA series is just preposterous. The games have less plot than Resident Evil (which I think will stink), and the characters are flatter than Lara Croft (which I thought was really bad). My prediction is that unless they drastically change things around so that the movie isn't too faithful to the games, this movie is going to flop badly.

Anyways,

Dead or Alive on the big screen

A movie version of Tecmo's Dead or Alive series is in the works.
Â*
Tecmo has announced that it has reached an agreement with Mindfire Entertainment to produce a movie based on the Dead or Alive series of fighting games. Dead or Alive will join a number of other video game franchises that have been made into movies lately, including Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil.

"To us, Dead or Alive is the perfect motion picture franchise," said Mark A. Altman, COO of Mindfire Entertainment. "DOA has set the standard for fighting games on every next-generation gaming console and has a loyal fan base throughout the world that is eagerly anticipating the release of a feature film based on this extraordinary video game series."

Production on the movie will begin later this year. It is scheduled for release in 2003.

I disagree. I think it looks terrible. The plot is derivative, the acting is sub-par, and some of the action I saw in the trailer was ridiculous to the point of getting bad laughs from the audience (such as the time Milla Jovovich did a wall jump in order to kick a dog). It may do well in the box office, but that doesn't make it a good movie any more than it makes Tomb Raider a good movie.

The only thing the Resident Evil movie has going for it are par for the course special effects, as far as I can see. You may watch the movie for that, but I'm not going to.

For some reason developers and movie-makers seem to forget all the video-game movie flops and insist on making more movies. I especially don't understand why each one thinks that their game is perfect for the big screen, especially games that aren't perfect for a movie at all.

haha that sounds like a dumb idea... but not as dumb as Crazy Taxi

and I think they should keep trying with videogames movies...

And just because videogame movies so far have had a history of sucking, doesn't mean you shouldn't make game sinto movies... You just have to know WHAT series to pick... it seems like movie peoples always pick the wrong kinds of games to make into movies, but when they do pick the right ones (Resident Evil could have been good, same with FF) they totally screw it up somehow (making it too different from the game and not relating at all, having bad dialogue or a confusing/bad plot, etc etc)...

A couple games I think could be really good movies are like... Grand Theft Auto 3... the story of a guy working his way up the "crime ladder" to seek revenge on the people who betrayed him (that's what the game was about, right? ) and stuff... it could be a really good actiony kinda... I dunno what else movie...

Silent Hill... From the reviews I've heard of RE, they turned it into a crazy action packed gorefest... With Silent Hill, if they kept it true to the game, they couldn't do that... It's the story about just an average guy who finds himself stuck in this crazy town... It has a nice plot and a nice really creepy setting... it could be a very good horror movie, unlike most of the horror movies lately... I think SH1 would make a better movie than 2 though, cuz there's more darkness and shifting through the world, and also the "Main plot" is better (the main plot of SH1 is harry trying to find his daughter and finding various connections between his daughter, who was adopted, and the town and such... SH2 is about James getting a letter from his dead wife and trying to find her... but I think SH2 has a really good "sub-plot" told through documents and pictures, about the town's history, which just couldn't be told very well in a movie I don't think... at least not the way it's told in the game)... they might have to add a few more supporting characters though just so it's not some guy walking around alone the whole time

Metal Gear Solid... this seems like such a frickin' obvious choice... The game itself is so much like a damn movie heh heh... MGS1 would make a better movie than 2, IMO, because MGS2 has some weird stuff that casual movie goers might find stupid or goofy (liquid's hand and some other stuff)... although I think MGS2 could make a good movie too with the tanker story and then 2 years later... and they could even fill in some of the stuff you don't get to see in the main game, like some of the stuff snake goes off and does...

And even final fantasy... I know it's not gonna happen since Square shut down their movie stuff (unless they give the rights to some other company or something), but I think if they tried it again, but stuck it in a setting that's not quite as sci-fi as it is fantasy (like maybe settings similar to FF3), and maaaaybe used real actors, and were able to get everything else worked out nice and good... y'know...

I also think that the Legacy of Kain series (Both Soul Reaver and Blood Omen) would be other good choices of games to turn into movies...

But I mean, recently they've been picking like... Crazy Taxi... or DoA3... and like I said, when they do pick the right game to make a movie out of, they totally screw it up... basically take the general idea of the game and make a totally different movie which ends up sucking...

But I think they should keep trying...

And this post is too long... nobody will read it

So far, the movies that have been based on video games have sucked, in my opinion. Now, like Xantar said, they may do good in the box office, but I also think that's from people like me going to see the movie to see if it sucks or not..

I have to agree with Deathshands, certain games have the potential to be made into a good movie. But when they have the chance, they screw it up. As for Resident evil, i can see the potentail. But at the sametime, i can see them screwing it right up. The past Zombie films, day the dead etc, etc or what ever (there normally something of the dead) were just funny. The acting was really, REALLY bad, especilly the people pretending to be zombies. I really hope that they can pull it off well with the resident evil movie, but at the sametime, i highly doubt it. I really don't want to find myself falling over with laughter over bad acting. I think resident evil would be better as a computer animated film, that way they wont screw up the zombies. Infact, it might be a better thing to turn games into computer animated films. Or anime films, the street fighter film sucked, but the anime film wasn't to bad. It stayed true to the game.

Also with games becoming films, they can really drifted away from the actaul game. Like super mario brothers, which had very weak links with the game. They basically just slapped on the name super mario brothers, and people went to see it.

When making games into films, they should really put more effort into staying true to the game. Instead of just making a crappy move and slapping a francise label on it.

Humm well personally

SHENMUE
Has a lot of potentail in becoming a film, not nessacerily live action, maybe computer animated. But i think it could become a fanatastic film, a brillant story and enough action.

ZELDA
And no, not the cell shaded one, perferably Ocarina of time. Although i think it would only really work in Anime or Computer animation. But it has a lot of potentail in becoming a film.

The problem is, games that are made into films are only the popular games. Not nessacerily games that have potentail plot wise. Crazy taxi has no real plot at all, but driving around picking people up. So how thats going to be made into a film, i'm not sure. But i can bet that when the film comes out, it will be so distant from the game. You wouldn't even think that it was based on the game. Heck, why don't they just go ahead and make the film without buying the license.

Because they know the license will help the films success, thats all it's about at the end of day.

Ya, to you, who is getting a chance to show off your company to the world if the movie succeeds.

It has? Honestly, DOA hasn't really set any standard for fighting games. Hell, DOA really only got popular after DOA3 for Xbox was announced. And like anything, fanboys go crazy with exclusive titles to pump a system they've never played. Mortal Kombat set a standard for fighting games, and the movie flopped. The sequel was worse.

Loyal fan base? Maybe. Eagerly anticipating the release of this film? I hope that's just a bad assumption, or he's pretty damn stupid
