I just got done watching this episode. Had a midterm tonight.

This episode really enforced my original view that the island is a physical manifestation of purgatory.

Explanation: So, the island, being the physical manifestation of purgatory, was originally discovered by the Egyptians. Still in their false idol worship of the sun god, Ra, etc, they mistook the smoke monster as a manifestation of Anubis (guide of the dead), and continue to remain in purgatory due to their idol worship. The Others date back to the Egyptians (Richard Alpert).
