Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
And here's the other idea of the spectrum, the game is enjoyable in single player. I mean that's all there needs to be said about it.
It tries a couple of different things, that I could be wrong on, such a rotating platforms and grates, it has some cool vertical scrolling levels in addition to the horizontal ones.
I know I have a rep for gushing over Nintendo, but I will have to say it will be hard for anyone not to respect them on what they accomplished in this game. They created a game that is the same exact game in both single and multplayer, but are able to make it feel like two completely different experiences.
Somethings become easier with multiplayer, and somethings become a pain in the ass, but it still is a fun and uplifting experience.
In single player, those things becoming challenging, and in some regards mini-puzzles all of their own.
Take for example a gold coin at the end of 3-3, in multiplayer my friend took one for the team and jumped down to grab it, of course there is no way to get back up, but we were able to finish the level.
In single player, you can't make the jump so you take a barrel and carry it down the runway and then toss it at the coin, and problem solved.
Same issue, different solutions.
Oh also, they have some minor added challenges to single player with the Toad rescue missions. Basically have to carry a Toad throughout a level and stuff, if you succedd get a 3up. Pretty cool for a different type of challenge.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
Okay so up to world 7, and let me just say that world 6 blew this game to a whole new level.
You have the return of many classic foes from throughout the series, the return of the airships from 3, some cool bosses battles, awesome music, some new Wii specific features (though you encounter some throughout the game) and one of the crazier maps yet.

How long are the levels? Because I seem to remember the levels in the DS one to be quite short...

Mario levels in general are relatively short, I believe at most, the counters go up to just about 10 minutes.
In this game, I would say the average level shouldn't last anymore than 5 minutes or so.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
So finally completed the game. It wasn't the toughest Mario, but it has to be one of the best. I feel the levels really pick up during the back half of the game.
The boss battles are some of the best in Mario games (which doesn't really say much, but they are fun and different, especially the final boss battle.)
There is some added tilt in the game, which really comes into play during World 7 and 8, and cause some intense levels that had me tearing out my hair.
And still have to complete the game in co-op which is a completely different experience, and some of the later levels just look like will be pure chaos.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
Yay, I got it yesterday, a day before launch! I walked in and asked them if they already sold them.
Within a few minutes, my brother and 1 of my sisters were playing it more than I did, that's always nice.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
I rented it today, and this game is awesome.
I'm not sure if I'll buy it though, I probably wouldn't play it enough to justify the 60+ bucks.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
So played this again in multiplayer and its still fun.
But first time playing Coin battle, and let me just say, that's where you let out your inner douche bag. I mean tossing your friends into pits... knocking them out with turtle shells... trying to race ahead to kill them... all in the name of getting the most coins.
Also there are some levels custom made for the mode, and it changes the design of some of the levels in the main game. A really fun addition to an awesome game.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
My brother and I have only done 2 coin battle levels so far, but it was nice.
Of course we weren't too competitive yet.
I ordered 2 more controllers, so in a few days the true mayhem can begin.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
The Free For All mode is awesome.
That is what makes this game amazing, to me.
I love just trying to rush certain levels to make my friends at the back die - or stalk them and pick them up and throw them into enemies/bosses/lava.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
4-player is great.
I also love coin battle, but my brother doesn't, so that sucks.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
Earl gets so mad at me for not really liking this game.
I like playing it two players with my girlfriend though since it's always nice when we have a game to play together.

Re: new Super Mario Bros Wii
It's incredible how much fun we've had with this game in the last weeks. We laughed out loud several times. So much chaos.
