I was also confused on Phoenix's appearance. She looked like she was from the Exorcist. What happened to the flaming red phoenix with red, orange and yellow?

Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
I haven't seen the movie yet so won't write an opinion on it.
But I will say some stuff in the defense of the movie that was out of the control of the director.
-The movie had about a year to go from concept to completion. Which may not sound like a bad thing. But when you take into effort that Spiderman and Batman pretty much film about 2 years before the release then goes through editting and all that other stuff. This movie had a year to get a script, shoot, edit, score and be out in theatres.
-Cast members who either had previous engagements or a certain someone who asked for more time or they would walk.

Maybe Nightcrawler, I know he wanted more money. And he wasn't that great an actor, and not that important a character.

I'm pretty sure Halle Berry said she wanted more time in the spotlight or she wouldn't do a third movie.

Halle Berry originally stated during interviews for X-Men 2 that she would not be returning for her role as Storm in the third film should the character not have a significant presence comparable to the comic book version. However, she decided to reprise the role after Singer left the project and Brett Ratner, who also felt Storm required a larger role, signed on and increased the role.

Alan Cumming was reportedly uncomfortable with the long hours he had to take with the Nightcrawler makeup, but still planned to return for X3. However, the part for Nightcrawler was so minimal, it was not worth it to bring him back and go through the long and costly make up process when he was barely in the film, and the character was cut.

Technically you didn't get what you expected because initially you were expecting a sequel from the same director.
But hey, who am I to start picking crow feathers?

Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
Magneto hates humanity and all, but I would have much rather they left him alone for a movie and introduced the Sentinals and stuff. They could have even thrown Gambit in there....although he is trouble.
By far, best part of Xmen 3 was the snakes on a plane trailer. First off, I initially called the preview before the previews started. I was like, "if they show one preview, it'll be snakes on a plane." Two, I also established that Snakes On A Plane was indeed a real summer blockbuster, as my friend still thought it was a joke. Finally, the whole theater was laughing and cheering. That movie is going to kick ass.

Its hard for me to say that Megneto should be removed from the film, as he is Xavier's alter-ego. He is the Malcolm X to Xavier's Martin Luther King, and I even kind of see him as a X-Man with just a severe difference of opinion.
I think you could have included the setinels (they had a cameo in the beginning danger room scene), and honestly I think that would have been a much better plotline. Afterall, the mutants real enemy was always mankind, not each other. And if not the Sentinels, how cool and different would Apocalypse have been? Then again, he may have been too esoteric for a general audience.
IMO, Fox has always put cost before quality in this series, its just that Singer and his team were talented enough to fashion lead into gold. But once again Fox continued to try and "Planet of the Apes" the series and Singer left for Superman in disgust.
Unfortunately Ratner does not share that talent and you end up with the flat and nearly comical looking final scene from X3. It looked cheap and staged, because it was.

Ah actually tho you would be incorrect. i never payed attention to who did the first 2. and had no expectations of a sequal at all. first i heard of the sequal was when i heard of the directer change, then i looked up the new direction to see what he's done.. therefor, that was my first expectation.
i win! :P

Re: X-men 3: The Last Stand (Pre-impressions)
Well just gonna say spoilers ahead and not bother to seperate the rest.
I must say the movie was a complete mixed bag for me.
I've come to accept that certain elements have got to change from page to screen when dealing with works like that. But some of the changes in X-men just threw me for a loop.
-The whole Phoenix thing just pissed me off. One is it pretty much drops any element of it that was presented in the comics or the cartoon. It is supposed to be an alien being.. not so much in the fact that it comes from space or anything but in the fact that it enters Jean's body and amplifies her powers. But this whole sub-con thing was just bleh. That and I think it went against what was establised in x2 as it seemed phoenix more or less came out when Jean exhausted her powers.
-Juggernaunt was changed into a mutant so that they could have an easy copout for the climax. Also they made him a complete waste. From design to ripping off an internet catchphrase.
Now that thats out of the way. My more practical issues with the movie.
-First and foremost, this was probably the worst end to a trilogy ever. First off they pretty much kill off or don't mention half of the characters from the original movies such as Nightcrawler, Toad, Sabbotooth, Cyclops, Professor X. Then there was the fact that they introduced so many characters like Kitty Pride (who was in the previous 2 movies as well but with a different actress in each), Colossus and pretty much everyone on Magneto's Brotherhood outside of Pyro. The only problem was most of those mutants were pretty much showpieces as they weren't given much story.
-Second was turning Magneto into some generic terrorist. Heck, Magneto seemed to have become Bin Laden in the film with him sending taped messages and being on the govts watch list but not being able to find him. Magneto is evil, Magneto is cunning, he is ruthless but they pretty much just simplified all of those elements.
-The plot. I don't know where the hell it was. I mean as far as I could tell the good mutants were on decent terms with the gov't and the evil mutants just wanted to cause trouble. So it was like half of mutants vs mankind with the other half of mutants or whatever... I don't know.
-the watered down X-team. For the end of the trilogy. Wolverine and Storm are the only members from the previous 2 movies "team". I have no problem with Iceman, Colossus, Kitty Pride and Beast but come on.. how watered down did they have to make the original team. not only that but 4 of them for the most part took out Magneto's army (Storm was busy fighting with the chick for most of the climax and Kitty was running around the building)
-They really needed to keep Cyclops alive in order to kill Jean. The way Logan did it just seemed so forced.

I found the movie kinda boring on a whole, and rather silly in various places... From the generic evil of Magneto, to the generic phrases of the President (which he couldn't seem to say with a straight face... "Then god help us all *smile*") to anything involving Juggernaut...
I've also got a petty bone to pick with the movie's subtitle, as I in no way saw how this was a "Last Stand"...
Mutants died, mutants changed, but some still remain, as does humanity...
Sooooo........
