Their problem with Japan is that Japan refuses to apologize to China for it's GENOCIDES in China during WWII. Search on Google for "The Rape Of Nanking", and put yourself in China's situation. That genocide has haunted China for decades and Japan won't even admit it happened, and it's not even taught in Japanese schools (not taught much or at all here, either). Would you want to be "friends" with a nation who humiliated your people? Probably not. At least Germany has admitted to it's crimes (unlike Japan and Turkey).
Also, South Korea and Japan are the two main capitalist countries in Asia. They would never ally with communists (China and North Korea).
