Yeah, I thought it was a little overkill as well.
Especially since from aside from the sword, they both kind of went the same route with Sonic on semi-rails gameplay.

Sonic Unleashed is the Next-Gen version. This is the Wii version.

Also, I don't know why, but I got a good Sega vibe from those pictures.

They go back to the roots of the series with side scrolling, but exploit the change to a wider aspect ratio with the popularity of 1080 widescreen HD tvs.

Imagine a super-speed side scrolling Sonic where you can see almost 50% more of the area from left to right...

That might be a nice sequence, but with the speed and all it will be over within a minute.
