While I don't advcate Warez, in fatc I'm 100% againbst it, I belive that *some* compaines need to drop the damn CD Keys!
Ok, here's my thing, if I buy a game, install it, register it, and play it, these companies should now offer em the option to "Disable" the need of a CD Key, I paid, I registered you have my Phone #, my Street Adress my E-mail address AND my full name! WTF more do you want, my Social Secuierty ID?!
This is what annoys me, the CD Key is a BS way of preventing Piracy, if you don't want a game copied from some loser, encrypt it, otherwise leave the player alone, a LOT of people, inclduing myself get "bent" when we can't find a CD Key because the case is burried under five others or isn't in the original case!
Also if people are going to pirate games will a CD Key stop them? NO! These people will write the CD Key on the CD-R with the game title and copy the d@mn thing anyway, or just crack it, my point is we need groups like the SPA (Software Piracy Association) back in buisness that investigated idiots who would sell bootlegged games, it was a tipline for piracy, it could be used much more today cosniderign if you don't want a game copied you shoud encrypt it.
Another problem I have is the new "No Archival" BS we get. I bought a game if I want ot make a CD-R "Archival" Copy for myself I should eb aghle too! if my Disc shatters in a craappy drive that's said to be "tested and working" I deserve a refund, computers need a "Lemon Law' the way cars have them and games need to lose the dang CD key!
As for removing them, CGM and CVGW often tell you where to get patches that take them out and Jeff Green has even been quoted as saying "I'll stop acting like a Pirate when you stop treating me like one!" which should say that publishers are fed up with BS CD Keys.
I don't think it's right to steal a game, but more PLAYABLE Demos and lower prices need to be put into practice, nobody likes droipping $50.00 on a crappy game with no tech suport and this is obvious, the CD key is the same as the red paper and the Wheel "Decoders" they used for DOS, it didn't stop piracy, people just made spreadsheets out of the data and printed it for friends, what good does a CD Key do? None.
I'm going to consider drafting a petition to game Developers to drop CD Keys and find a meathod that we can all agree on, even if this meathod is "Crippleware Back-ups" meaning you can only burn a CD COPY once, someting has to be doen about CD Keys, until then game developers aren't going to have it easy when it comes to questions like "Why doesn't this game work?" and the answer is the CD Key was typed in wrong with no exapmle of how to type in "XXXX-XXXX-XXXX" as "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX" or case sensitive or not, this annoys gamers and some CD Kerys are worse than tohers, case and point, ditch the keys, encrypt the discs.
