Oh snap, too mainstream for you?

I find that a good balance of unknown and known makes my ears happy.

Really? What happened to listening to music based on the talent of the artists?

Comparing him to Dave Matthews is really NOT fair. I hate Dave Matthews but I love James Blunt. He's more like a modern day Elton John.

I have the Back to Bedlam album...and every song on it is just incredible. Not only are the lyrics great, but his voice is angelic. I could sit and listen to him sing without any music.

Does anyone know where I could go to download a live performance of him? I'd like to hear him live.

He begins his tour of the US on March 17...too bad the closest he gets to my house is about 6 or 7 hours away.

Oh burrrrn.

Would you like to sift through the 24,000 songs on my computer, or the 900 unripped CDs sitting in my room? That's been one of my mantra for about 15 years, thank you. Talent isn't the only determing factor, I think sound should be first. Kurt Cobain was a bum. He ripped off countless musicians, including The Mevlins (same high school, i'm sure you don't listen to them), he wasn't particularly great at guitar, but he still sounded good.

And if that comment was directed at me, that's really unfair. You should have pointed that at the people shooting down the James Blunt album because I made a comparison to Dave Matthews. I hold my comment valid, because if all you listen to is mainstream music, then you are missing out on a lot of cool stuff you won't ever hear on MTV or the radio. And 99% of the "talent" lies outside the mainstream box. Drumming, guitar playing, bass playing, the virtuoso crap lies outside the box.

I'll admit that I was shooting down James Blunt initially based upon your comparison to Dave Matthews. That was unfair, I should have given him a chance.

I was in the car listening to XM radio yesterday and that James Blunt song came on, so I turned to it. Now I've actually listened to it and now I know that it sucks...Fair enough?

Whoa now, I didn't mean to be offensive.

I didn't take offense. And that wasn't meant to be a harsh reply. I'm just telling you I listen to a lot of music, mainstream, not mainstream, and I listen to it because I like the way it sounds, and because I appreciate the talent behind it.

But, if I just went, "I like Dave Matthews," I bet I would be subjected to a lot of negative criticism. Which is fine. It's happened to me before. But I also listen to a lot of other stuff, from Stravinsky to the Secret Chiefs 3 to the Buena Vista Social Club, and I guess that's the stuff that maybe defines me more as an individual.

That long post was more of a defense for my original post in this thread, not as much rebuttal to your reply, which I mostly agree with. Talent more often than not equates to good sound.
