Facebook/Myspace, feelings towards having online friends added

So, I had this conversation with BaB today about how we feel about adding people on our facebook accounts that we met online. For this example, it was BaB adding me, but I seriously considered if this was a good idea or not since I've only ever talked to him through GT or on AIM.

Another concern of mine is if people that I know from my everyday life might question who all of these unfamiliar people are that are friends with me. But eventually, BaB and I came to the conclusion that eventually all our friends become a blur.

I have so many friends from the different places that I live at, and my friends from high school probably don't know any of my friends from college, so honestly, adding people that I met online won't be any different. Basically, my point is that most of my friends don't technically know each other anyway, so how would they be able to distinguish real life friends from online friends?

What does everyone else think?

Also, I could probably add some of you on facebook now that I don't really care about the issue as much anymore, though you won't find me in a search if you look up ZebraRampage haha.

I added BaB as friend on facebook, and for now he is the only foreigner on my list I really don't care what other people think about me if I add people met online...

And so far, no one actually cares about those stuff I guess. I mean, who is to decide what a "friend" is actually. it might differ from people to people. Do you have to meet someone in person to actually be friends with them? or is it enough to have common interests and talk about those on a -almost- daily basis? We're all here talking about games, and lately, mostly about stuff other than games, so why not be "friends"? Well of course some of you know each other for a long time, unlike me, but is there a reason not to be?

I'd be happy to add any of you guys, if you want of course.

Even though I'm usually like this --->

I only search out people to add that I know personally. But I'll accept friend invites from almost anybody I know.

I think it depends on how long you've known the online person. I wouldn't add someone that I haven't known that long. You got to be cautious though and follow your gut instinct.

The internet is a mixed-bag. There are perfectly, normal folks who are harmless. And then there's the wackos. And sometimes the weird ones pose as normal people for all kinds of strange reasons. And some of them will lure you in and may have the skills to identify sensitive information about you like your name, address, etc. And that can be a real unsettling feeling.

I think you're okay adding GT folks. Anywhere else though... proceed with caution.

Being that all of you, but one is on my facebook should answer that question.

But in all honesty, some people must have some truly anal friends. I mean I don't think there is a single person besides myself who could go through my entire friend's list and pick out where I know people from. I mean it now spans Elementary School through college, and everywhere in between.

I should be happy, I'm the outlier. I'm the only person who hasn't given into Earl's facebook stalking needs. It's not that I object to letting Earl be my Facebook friend...it's just that I enjoy having the 'mysterious' private life. Once you friend me you can see how boring I am. And believe me, I'm probably the most boring person on the forum.

Becoming "close" friends with people across the country, or even around the world for that matter, does have some very interesting benefits. For example, knowing Earl well enough to trust him to not molest me while I sleep has given me a place to stay when I fly to NY this Thursday

Why do you assume this is related to me?
How do you know these people didn't befriend me first?

And I don't know how "mysterious" you can be when you seem so forthcoming with all the wrong info.

I'm not a chosen one and for good reason I've resorted to using Facebook with a few friends. Never was a fan of any of these kinds of sites but I had to give in unfortunately.

I share my aim / twitter / gamertag with anyone. Facebook is reserved for only people I know in real-life.

I don't view it as one being better than the other, they're just different.
