The Problem With Sequels
Another fun-filled morning of work has left me bored and thinking about sequels while watching Die Hard.
And I realize the two biggest pitfalls with most sequels
1)Change in tone from the original.
2)Trying to remake the original.
Now, I'm sure this won't be the way with all sequels but look at most of the sequels people have issues with and I'm sure one of those two results will come up.
Die Hard 2 was Die Hard in an airport. Temple of Doom became rather dark and gloomy and enclosed. Batman Returns (even though I prefer it) was darker than the original which resulted in Forever and the other one. The Matrix Reloaded tried to be as important as the original and fell flat on its face.
Even in video games, Prince of Persia 2 went darker and that didn't work out as well. Super Mario Bros 2 and Zelda 2 changed the core gameplay. While argubably good games in their own regards had very little influence on the rest of the franchise.
Just something thought about while here.
