They're Arab countries that are forward thinking enough to realize that getting their nations out of the medeival age is a smart thing. The "Western causes" that you mention aren't necessarily supporting western military or economic endevours. They also include the education and rights of women and democracy in general.

I'm not saying those things are bad, and believe it or not I (Yes, little old liberal me) actually happen to believe that the conservative beliefs (rights of women, or lack thereof, education in general, the literal eye for an eye justice system, theocracy in general) held by many Muslims are, in fact, completely backwards and far inferior to western traditions. What you fail to grasp, here, is that, though they are forward thinking, they're still rooted in western thought and philosophy and no matter what you or they say or do, they're going to be viewed by the terrorists in the same light as the truly western nations.
