I'm having a similar experience. It isn't that hard. As for the enemies that hit you with the big blue/green stuff (the "bfg stuff" I think) - try staying away from them. Then when they shoot that at you dodge to the side and move forward (yes TOWARDS the creature). That way you'll avoid splash damage as well.
