Default Arts awards night

June.01/2004

Wow. What a crazy night. I have pictures but they need to be developed so i'll scan them and post them later.

But here's how the evening went.

My family and I showed up 20 minutes prior to the show but the theatre was already packed. We managed to find some seats and waited for the show to start. The drama teacher came out and gave an introduction and the show started. There was a skit followed by a serious scene. I looked down in the program and noticed that they spelled my name wrong (They put Dylan Innis instead of Dylan Innes). I found that greatly discouraging. Then they showed the first batch of films. They started off the films with my group's project, El Bandito. I was quite excited by the fact that they weere showing it. But I was completely suprised when I found out they were showing my group's other (20 minute long project) "Daze & Nights" which both Dyne and I act in.

Fun fact: I wrote most of El Bandito as well as directed it. Although I didn't direct Daze & Nights, I did write a lot of it.

"El Bandito" got a lot of laughs. A lot of people in the audience were older and appreciated how Benny Hill-esque the movie was. The movie got a lot of applause at the end. The first set of awards was given out and my group was given certificates Outstanding Filmaking for "El Bandito". A few girls screamed my name as it was called. We received our awars then ran off the stage in the Benny Hill like fashion that was showcased in the film. We sat down and enjoyed a couple of short films in the style of a commercial. Then they showed a great computer animation about the nightmare of a penguin that was hunted by a dinosaur. At that point it was intermission and we were offered snacks and refreshments. The hallway was packed so I didn't attempt to obtain any. A few people came up and congratulated me for "El Bandito". I was quite overwhelmed.

Everyone returned to their seats and we all enjoyed a skit, a few serious scenes and a couple of lip syncs that were hilarious. Then they showed a second batch of films. We were subjected to an experimental film that was about being one with nature. It was relaxing but very long and at some points, extremely corny. The showed a couple more commercial themed films. One of which was about the new Jesus or "Jesus 2.0". My friend Cedric had a commercial film about respecting public toilets which was hilarious. He won an award for it. They gave out more awards. I failed to mention before that there are three sets of awards.

1. General Arts (Computer Graphics, Photography, Drawing, Painting and Sculpting)

2. Drama (Acting)

3. Film making

Most of the awards given out took the form of certificates but some people got really tacky statuettes called "Flippers". They were little ceramic dolphin thingies. I thought they were hilarious. Only some people who really excelled at things got them. We were treated to a few more scenes. Then they showed "Daze & Nights" which was 21 minutes long. I was worried about how it would go over because the version I have of it has terrible sound issues. But my group-mate Chris fixed all of the problems and made it much better. Everybody loved the movie. There were laughs the entire way through. (I'll try to get a version up to show you guys.) There was a huge round of applause afterwards followed by a second huge round of appluase. My group was called back up and we received certificates that said "Best Narrative Film Daze & Nights". We were again applauded.

At this point, the grand awards were distributed. I received the biggest award (in size, perhaps not in importance) for Director of the Year for my directing and scriptwriting class. It was freakin' huge. My name was engraved on a mini plaque on it along with little plaques containing of the names of those who had won the award before me. (Oh, btw, I'm apparently the only 11th grader to ever win the award). So as the last awards were given out, everyone piled out of the theatre. I stuck around and chatted with some people and I got words of encouragment and words of a congratulatory nature. I had to return the award as it goes in the school trophy case but I received a "Flipper Award" to take home.

I got home and opened my certificates and discovered that my name was spelled incorrectly on both (I'll have to hope I can get them redone). I realized that I was about ten times happier that everyone enjoyed my films than I was about receiving any award.

It was a great night.

I'm not quite sure how I'm going to get to sleep now.

Wow, that's awesome. Great job Too bad you can't actually take home the director of the year award though..

Question: Is your school an arts school or does it just have enough students interested in that area to have an awards ceremony like this?

*shrugs and walks away*

Man, that night sounded fun to the extreme. I wish my school had art awards.

I wonder if Dylflon had to wear formal clothing for the occasion?
