Default Ouya: The Future of Gaming Consoles?

This project was announced like last week, but they threw up the Kickstarter this morning and already full-funded.

Not what's important, what is it?

Quote:
OUYA is a new game console for the TV, powered by Android.

We've packed this little box full of power. Developers will have access to OUYA's open design so they can produce their games for the living room, taking advantage of everything the TV has to offer.

Best of all, OUYA's world-class controller, console, and interface come in one beautiful, inexpensive package. All the games on it will be free, at least to try.
Essentially a console that uses Android's open platform to bring great ideas to life in the console space, and using a controller, which is usually a giant knock against mobile gaming.

There's more at the link including a video.

I think the idea is very intriguing, and the project has already been backed. Now curious to see how the business side of it actually works out.

Interesting. These are already the sort of games I play exclusively these days. Believe I posted Canabalt here before. Pretty content just playing them on my computer though.

For $99 I'll give it a try. If it takes flight then great, if it doesn't I won't have spent too much on it. I'm curious about it and curious enough to get one.

I really don't see how this can be successful. It seems to be taking the best pieces of console development (the closed platform) and throwing it out the window. In addition, it seems to be further segmenting the Android market further than it already is. Not really sure who would develop for such a thing, and not really sure what consumers would want one for, especially given the hardware. By the time it launches we may be well into iPad 4 era, and that'll be the type of hardware it's competing against.

I'm more curious about their business plan

Right now they plan on sustaining themselves on F2P games, extended demos and indie titles.

I mean.. it may work.. but we shall see

Honestly the game industry needed something like this since xbox live actually worked. I'm pumped to see where this goes, and for 100 dollars I'm down with buying one.

I personally believe the best aspect of console development is static hardware that you can make the most of.
