I must have really sucked at video games when I was a kid.
I just started playing Super Mario Land, DK 94 and Kirby's Dreamland from the eShop and I find that I'm progressing much farther along in these games than I did when I first got them 10+ years ago.
I guess you just get better experience with age.

Because you were smaller, the games just seemed so much bigger. You were amazed by everything you saw, so you took your time.
Now you're not only playing a game you already know, it's also a game that's incredibly simple by today's standards.
I have personally found that some games are harder now than when I was a kid. Super Mario Bros 3, the last world with all the battleships, tanks and firepits. How did I ever beat that game as a 12 year old??

That statement reminds me of how I recently played all the way through Zelda II: The Adventure of Link in one day. It took me four hours to complete, and I only got one "game over".

You're a boss. That's the only Zelda game I haven't finished. I don't know how I'm gonna do it.

I had almost finished Zelda 2, I took too long to find out how to defeat the last boss. And since it takes 20 minutes of very hard enemies to get to him after a Game Over, I ran out of patience.

I think it might also just be because you played through them when you were younger, so you're still (somewhat) familiar with them.
I downloaded Sonic 2 for PS3, and burned through that game faster than I thought I would. And then I found out I still remembered the level-cheat code, just because I played that freakin' thing so much as a kid.

I know what you mean. Despite what I just said, occasionally on some older games there are parts where I just get so annoyed and think "How did I do this as a wee little baby, and not as a giant manly adult?"

When my cousin and I got to the final boss (Thunderbird), what we didn't know is that we didn't have the proper spell to help defeat him. Once we got everything together though, I was the one who did all the work trying to defeat him, and I'd always keep getting defeated. The worst time was when I only needed just ONE MORE HIT to finish him, and he got all relentless with his attacks and he did me in. I eventually defeated Thunderbird, but that wasn't the end. I still had to deal with Link's shadow. I don't think I won on the first try, but he wasn't a pain in the neck like Thunderbird was. If I did get a game over before I ever defeated Link's shadow though, it's just good that you at least don't have to deal with Thunderbird again. Though what really helps against Thunderbird is when your attack level is at its zenith. Mine was always at 7 when dealing with Thunderbird, but you should make sure it's at 8.
Thunderbird is seriously my most hated video game villain in all the games I've ever played in my life.

Re: I must have really sucked at video games when I was a kid.
Every once in a while I find the opposite to be true... I go back and play a game, and go, "how the fuck did I beat this as a kid, this is hard!"
I agree though...games that once kicked my ass are now easier. I think a big part of it is improved cognitive development...specifically patience. Once you figure out how to nail jumps (think Megaman, for example), it becomes a science of memorizing patterns and being patient enough to not push the A button and wait 2 seconds to jump and shoot. Or to have the patience to sit in a boss battle for 10 minutes while you whittle away their health.
And then there are games like Goldeney 64, which was frustratingly hard because THE CONTROLS AND FRAMERATE SUCK ASS. If you moused and keyboarded that shit anyone could beat it on 007 difficulty. But that is part of the fun I guess....
