Must-read for those 25 or older
I found this through somebody's Twitter. Great read!
http://tomatonation.com/?p=838.
A lot of stuff I've been doing since I was 19. Other stuff I'm working on, like driving lessons.

Re: Must-read for those 25 or older
Being 25 in about 5 months, this is scary...well all those having to do with having enough money. The social etiquette ones I pretty much do already or don't apply to me.
Just need to get a job that makes enough money to move out of parents' place...and since there is no way I'll be able to afford staying in NYC by myself, I'll have to get a driver's license and a car too...and pick a city/town to live in. Everything after that should be easy peasy.

Re: Must-read for those 25 or older
Not being able to calculate tip is a pet peeve of mine. I have become "the tip guy" amongst several of my friends who are either too lazy or too dumb to figure out tip. Put your fucking tip calculator away though, you look like a jackass when you whip your phone out to do 2nd grade math.
The article is true though...if you can multiply by 1 you can figure out the tip.
1 x 1 = 1
1 x 2 = 2
1 x 8===D = 8===D
etc.
$47.36 x (10%) or .1 = 4.736
multiply by 2 for a 20% tip, or divide by 2 (or multiply by 1/2) and add that for 15%.
and for simplicity sake, if the waiter was good I would just round $4.736 up to $5. If the waiter wasn't good round down to $4.50 or $4.

Yeah, I hate going out and waiting for everyone to divide up the check and calculate tip.
I generally keep a mental tab of my bill, and I can generally do 15% in my head, but my friend also showed me the NY trick since tax is about 8.65%, just like double it and you get the tip.

Re: Must-read for those 25 or older
I hate people who actually calculate a tip.
Just round it off to a fair, even number, make it easy on yourself - and generous to them. Because keep in mind, the "hospitality industry" (bartenders, waitresses, and the like) get paid all in tips, which is why they get paid near-minimum wage.

Re: Must-read for those 25 or older
The standard in Holland is a 10% tip.
But I always let it depend on the quality of the service. If it's a nice waiter/waitress and they were on time etc, I'll go above that. If they're not doing anything special and they're late, I might only tip 5%, or none at all.

Re: Must-read for those 25 or older
Well, the Europeans have it down right. The tip is included and if you want to leave a little more for great service you don't have to do any calculating. However, even for the mathematically challenged (not me), most phones have tip calculators now.

The way it works here is the same, tip already included on your bill, its up to you if you want to leave some extra.

Re: Must-read for those 25 or older
I hate the idea of tipping. I think they should get paid for the work they do, and then if someone really likes the service, the customer can reward them. Paying them less assuming they get tips is stupid, and that includes auto-including the tip. The whole thing is stupid.
Also, if someone waits 3 tables and they order burgers and hot wings, and another waits 3 tables and they order filet mignon, lobster tale, and a fine wine, they did the same amount of work, and should be paid the same. Their pay week-to-week shouldn't fluctuate depending on what food the people ordered and how much it cost.

Re: Must-read for those 25 or older
Being almost 25, I do agree with a lot of this, however I have issues with number 2.
Yeah, I understand "crashing" on people's floors is not cool, but if you are truly friends with the person, this shouldn't be an issue. It just means you have more time to talk/catch up hang out before bed and when you get up. Some of my best recent memories are of the big summer parties where friends get together and have a few too many and crash on air mattresses or futons or the floor or wherever. Maybe we won't be doing this into our 30's, but as a traveling musician, I bet we will be.
Anyway, that's the main bit. A lot of this stuff I feel like I've generally started doing. The stuff I haven't, ehh...who needs it?
