in Japan at least. Elsewhere, from what I've read, DS and PSP are more closely matched.

This just proves that Nintendo doesn't own the handheld market anymore. The PSP has succeeded in taking an acute piece of the market. Only time will tell with PSP2 and other handheld projects Sony has to bring to the table.

Remember Nintendo has several years of handheld dominance in their pocket... i don't think anyone expected the PSP to topple the giant on it's first try.

Some did, actually. I mean look what they did with the Playstation. Some thought it would be something similar.

The playstation had good timing, Nintendo started ditching 3rd party and they decided to keep cartridges.

Depends how you define the market. The PSP itself is selling decently in territories other than Japan. However, software sales for the thing are miserable compared to the DS. So the PSP is somehow selling all right. Just not as a game machine in comparison to the DS.

But then again, I think you knew that.
