First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
Quote:
Pioneer Electronics has announced the industries first Blu-ray Disc computer drive, sporting Blu-ray burning, for the first quarter of 2006
The new Pioneer BDR-101A will utilize shorter wavelength blue lasers in order to store up to 25 gigabytes of information on a single layer Blu-ray Disc.
Andy Parsons, senior vice president, Pioneer Electronics, USA, said, "Storage capacity in a stable medium is critical. A few years ago, no one could imagine needing more storage than available on a CD-R. Yet today, we need multiple DVDs just to back up the numerous photo and video files on our computers. Blu-ray Disc technology fulfills the rapidly growing need for more storage space and Pioneer is proud to be one of the first companies bringing it to market."
The BDR drive will be extremely fast compared to prior formats debut drives: 1xCD (0.18MB/s), 1xDVD (1.39MB/s), and 1xBD (4.56MB/s). The rotational speed reached by a 2x read Blu-ray drive is equivalent to 6.59x DVD or 51.73x CD.
The BDR-101A Blu-ray Disc/DVD writer will read BD-ROM/R/RE at 2x.
DVD-ROM/DVD-R/DVD-RW and +R/+RW discs are also supported to be read.
It offers write speeds of 2X for BD-R/RE, 8X for DVD-R/+R and 4X for DVD-RW/+RW
The drive also supports DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL, while CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-RAM are not supported.

So....if these aren't too expensive, I'll definitely be picking one up by the end of the year. I've been looking for practicle ways to back up my music, and I don't really want to use 30 DVDs.

Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
Yeah but i'm kinda wondering how much the blank ones will be. Prices have significantly be slashed for CD-R's now.... DVD's are now at a bargain price and BRD? hmm ...
I predict blank BRD's to go for $49.99 for a pack of 20 or something.
But then you could fit thousands of songs or large packets of info in there...
Either way.... movies will eventually make their leap to BRD, considering how many movies they have now for the UMD format for PSP. So eventually buying a PS3 will become a option for kids, teens, and adults alike. This is what happened when PS2 launched with the DVD player.... it was a hot selling point.

What we have to do is go rogue and set up a secret VCR/VHS manufacturing facility.

Re: First Blu-ray Drive by Pioneer Q1 2006
No..I meant if you compare the fact it takes 2-3 minutes roughly for a 52x CD Burner to burn a full CD, and that BRD is ALOT higher then that, the burn times are going to be very high.
I'm not purposely screwing up my math if I am. I'm comparing the fact that 2x of anything media related is "slow" even if brand new.
Would you buy a 2x CD burner or 2x DVD burner? I'm gonna wait until probably at least 4x since its a ltitle better off. Hell, we arent even close to 52x for DVD's

I was taking it from the actual song.. and thats for the clarification Null I really wasn't sure what he said there..
EDIT:

Quote:
According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps). Blu-ray also has the potential for much higher speeds, as a result of the larger numerical aperture (NA) adopted by Blu-ray Disc. The large NA value effectively means that Blu-ray will require less recording power and lower disc rotation speed than DVD and HD-DVD to achieve the same data transfer rate. While the media itself limited the recording speed in the past, the only limiting factor for Blu-ray is the capacity of the hardware. If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps). This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future.

Basically.... 1x BDR would burn a 800MB CD in about 22 seconds.
Let's go out on a limb and say you actually fill up a 25GB BDR.
It would write on 1x the full 25GB in 11 minutes.
Now a 2x which is 72mbps would write the full 25GB in... 5 minutes
If my research is correct 52x CD-R is about 7.8mbps...which is significantly slower than 1x BDR...
enough speed for you Jonbo or a lil sluggish?
