Default MP3 Players

Hey everybody. I will be purchasing an MP3 player sometime this week, hopefully within the next couple of days. I was hoping to get the Sony S2 256MB MP3 player. It looks awesome, and apparently the software that comes with it is really easy to use. This costs 229.99 CDN.

Anybody know anything about the S2? Good? Bad? Any better MP3 players out there for cheaper price?

i sure hope you mean 256mb on some sort of flash or memory card thats removable. because at such a tiny amount of space, that price is a total rip off.

Don't worry about it, .That makes sense to me.
Do you often use a computer there?

Ya I agree. Sounds like a pretty big rip off to me. That and its a Sony. Your best bet on MP3 players would probably be an Ipod, although ive noticed this one made by DELL that is 5Gb's for only $199. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, im sure you'll find it on Dell's website, if your interested...

i think the ipod mini's are about 5gig at $250 of course thats not canadian tho.

Do i need to bring up my chart on a 40gig ipod at $500 vs 128mb mp3 player at $100 ?
Basically with out doing the math again... with a $100 mp3 player at 128mb, you'd be payin like $14,000 to equal a 40gig ipod.
While with the 40gig ipod your payin like 4cents for every 128mb

i do hate low storage mp3 players

I had a low storage MP3 player (128mb), and my portable CD player eventually won it over. But that is because I have over 500+ albums on actual CD, and I didn't feel like ripping album after album onto the PC just to temporarily keep it on my MP3 player. Personally, I think any flash-based MP3 player that does not store more then 5gigs of music is a complete waste of money. You are going to be constantly moving music around, and it's going to be a hassle. But, if you're the type of person that has hundreds of CDs on your computer, and you don't mind using your MP3 player as a CD player, getting a 256mb MP3 player might be the right choice for you. Albeit, the math that Null did is scarily accurate, 400 dollars is considerably higher then however much you will be spending on a 256mb MP3 player.

What I advice you to keep in mind is: Apple is already facing competition. There are MP3 players that are coming out, and already on the market, like the Iriver, that have more features and are of higher quality then the Ipod - and many of them cost less then the Ipod. Grant it, the Ipod still has a very slick design, but it comes with a hefty price tag and I've heard more then my fair share of mediocre reviews for the Ipods software.

I have personally been holding out on purchasing an MP3 player, just because I think by the end of next year the price of a high-space model will be considerably down from what it is now. Paying 400 dollars for 40gigs of space is expensive. I have over 500cds that I will be ripping to my PC to put onto my next MP3 player, and that's not even taking into account the 10+ gigs of music on my computer right now.

If I was you, I'd put together another one or two hundred dollars and consider buying a 10 or 20gig MP3 player. But if you don't mind constantly having to move your music around....then I guess the 256mb MP3 player might work for you.

While this is true, the ipod has some very HUGE advantages over any of the competition. namily the accessories for it.
all the adapters, Things like speakers, voice recorders, stands, remotes, etc. all made for the ipod while others get barly a precentage of the amount ipods get. Not to mention ipod is the only mp3 player they've ever designed car systems around. like the BMW that comes with ipod support as a manufacter option.
as other mp3 players keep changing and changing, apples ipod has already set itself up as the standard.

and ipods software argument is moot because it doesnt even require that you use that software. theres many alternatives. i mean i use Winamp for my ipod software. lol, loading and unloading songs off my ipod.

But if your not really worried about the accessories. then yea there are mp3 players at better prices. i just always like seeing the gizmos they come up with for the ipod. hehe.

"The NW-S23 digital music player comes with 256MB of embedded memory that lets you store more than 170 songs* or drag an drop data files. Super long battery life, the unit provides up to 70 hours of continuous playback with one AAA battery. The NW-S23 plays back ATRAC3plus™ audio that lets you drag and drop MP3s and the supplied SonicStage II software supports WMA and WAV digital files."

That is from the website. The asterisk is :
*Calculated based on 4 minutes per song @ 48kbps.

SO basically, 170 songs (or 11 hours of music) and 70 hours of battery life.

Sounds pretty good to me. I'd rather spend LESS than 250 CDN, so IPOD is out of the question. And this will be mostly for running and hitting the gym. It is cool because it is small, and can go on my arm.
