Default Chipped X - Box's

Legal Jargon. It is illegall to copy, modify and or reproduce a product that is under copy right protection. Chipping your X-Box voids your manufacturers warranty.

On that note I was just wondering if anyone here has their X-Box chipped and what your views on this are.

For me the positives far outweighed the negatives and I got mine chipped. Reason being that I can now use my X-Box to run all my old favourites. It acts as a N.E.S, S.N.E.S, Master System, Mega Drive (Genesis) N64, Playstation... I could go on. All with a little thing called emulation and roms. I know that regular users of this website have mixed views on this so I wondered if you agree or disagree with it.

It's dishonest I know but I now never have to buy a game again. I can just rent one, rip it to my hard drive and it effectively becomes a built in game. All those people waiting for Halo 2, I played it, ok the voice acting is in french but you still get everything else in english. It's looking pretty damn good, fans of the game arent going to be disappointed.

My reason is this, for anyone who lives out of home and holds down a full time job will understand that they dont live out of their parents pocket anymore if I can rent a game and copy it rather than wasting £40 then bonus, I got cash for a game and my weekly shopping / bills. My other reason is that I wouldn't be able to afford the games otherwise meaning I would never play them.

Illegal breach of copy wright and and video game piracy. I love it. What's your view.

My view is that you are a scumbag and a thief. I hope you get caught and rot in jail and have to pay off fines for the rest of your life.

Here's an idea... get a job and pay for the damn games so that the people that bust their ass to get them to us can make a living from what they love.

actually putting a mod chip in a console isnt as cut and dry as illegal / legal. it depends on what your doing with it.

And emulators from past consoles i have no problem with. They dont make the games amymore, and they arent getting any money off thoes games either way. your always finding them re sold by people. So finding emulators for thoes such as old NES games, doesnt hurt anyone.

new games however, i'd suggest people get off thier lazy ass and buy the damn thing. people who made the game deserve the money for the work they put into em. downloading copies of thoes is the same as walking into a store and putting it in your pocket.

Same view as most here, I have no problem with old emulated games because they are so bloody hard to find anyways, and also I hate having to have all the different consoles to play the games.

However, new games are bad to be ripping like that, because that just encourages that sort of thing more.

yeah, but there is no one that does emulating that does not rip games to their XBOX harddrive.

this is why xboxnext is not putting a harddrive in. they are sick of pirates (they deserve it for not taking better measures)

piracy is retarded.... this is why games are freaking 50 bux at launch. i'd bet more games would be 39, or 29 if piracy comes down.

No. Games are $50 because they can be $50.

And honestly, if I'm never going to buy a game - but it's fun to play from time to time - I've got no problem with people pirating games.

I don't have any of my systems modded. But I just don't care. Yeah, there are legitimate pirates out there that download everything they can. But if you're never going to buy the game - then the company isn't going to make any money off of you anyway and nobody really loses anything. I don't know about anybody else, but I'm extremely picky about buying games. I don't buy games unless they've either gotten rave reviews, or they're part of a series that has entertained me time and time again.

And I know I'm going to get flamed for that, but it makes no difference. It's like the South Park episode when it's showing all of the recording artists living lives of "semi-luxury" because of pirates.

Oh, and by the way, the Xbox can be softmodded so it doesn't even need a chip (using a Mech Assault bug).

For those of you telling me get up off my fat lazy ass and get a job read my post again. I work full time, 45+ hours a week so dont go giving me any s**t about being lazy. I got my x-box chipped primarily for the emulation. I had a razz on Halo 2 now and would consider buying the game.

If piracy were stopped outright then the prices of games would not come down, they charge what they do for them because they can. They have the monopoly.

As I said I would not be able to afford the games otherwise, not when I have to choose between that and eating. Try living on a budget and you will see, I dont live outta mummy and daddys pocket anymore. I work my ass off every day, sometimes 7 days a week to struggle to make my living so dont go getting on your high horse with me boy.

Anyway points noted. We all have our own ways and means.

I don't give a rat's crap about your excuses. I live on a budget and work in a bar while putting myself through school. Thats called living on a budget. I haven't bought a new game since Fable (needed trade-ins to get it) and before that I didn't buy a new game since Farcry. I don't steal because its illegal, its wrong and in the end ITS NOT MINE TO TAKE. There s a thing called renting a game, so your poverty claims are completely rediculous.

This isn't about whether or not the price of the games come down. Market price is set by demand, not by whether or not YOU can afford them. Just because YOU can't afford them doesn't give you the right to just take it. Nothing gives you that right whether legally or ethically.

Pirating hurts the business that you profess to love and enjoy so much that you just can't go without playing games that you can't afford. In the end its selfish and needless and reprehensible. If you were just using your chipped box for emulation, then I wouldn't have a problem. But your not. Your stealing new material and costing people who studied for years to do what they love their right to claim the rewards from their hard work.

I repeat: You are scum. Enjoy wallowing in that fact and I hope that the numerous bull**** excuses that you manufacture set your conscious at ease so that you can live with the fact that you are scum.

Get caught. Get fined. You deserve it.

I don't pirate I just don't buy games.. If a friend of mine gets a game and they finish with it I'll borrow it.. It's not pirating because they remove the game from their computer and as do I before I give the cd back ... It's called working the system read the piracy laws.. However if it's a good multiplayer game C&C generals and such I'll just go buy the game..

So you know what Ric, I aint gona hate on you cuz you got your Xbox to do what you are getting it to do. I think its just taking advantage of technology before someone else can. So good for you.

I find it funny that it was Ric that "threatened" me yet I get all the criticism even though all I said was that I could defend myself if need be. I wonder if there could be a little bias in the reaction to this?

Anyway, it was childish to even respond to such a inane and sophomoric "threat", so for that I apologize.

But make no mistake, those that pirate games are still ethically empty and morally vacuous scumbags. End of story.

Off the record.. Dude I dont care who you are, if you called me a scumbag to my face I would kick your head in so enough of the childish immature name calling before it all gets out of hand. We are all friends on this forum.

I see your point and agree with you on a lot of what you say. The only x-box game I have got is Halo 2 and only coz a mate downloaded it, ripped it off and burned me off a copy without my even asking.

As for 'renting' fair enough, point noted. But what if you cant afford to rent a game in the first place. Are you telling me I dont deserve to play computer games because I cant afford them. Thats like me charging you for oxygen and not selling you it because you cant afford it.

I have over 300 video games that I have spent hundreds of £/$ on over the years and chipping my box means I can compile all these together, on one console. I have no problem with people getting games off the net that they can no longer buy as is the general feeling among most people on these forums.

Put yourself in my shoes, as a video game fan yourself. You really want a game, you work your arse off all month, you pay your rent, bills, t.v licence, council tax weekly food allowance and a packet of cigs and you are skint.

I put it to you that if someone came up to you under those circumstances and said, you have to wait a month for this game or here's a copy you can go and play now. You would take the copy. I only borrowed it, I will give it back soon in the knowledge that I like the game and if I manage to save the money for it I would buy it. I much prefer to have origional copies of games as much as the next person.

This is not what you said to begin with, and I don't believe what you are saying here. If you have the game for free and bothered to chip your box and burn a new game, why would you bother to buy the original? You wouldn't and you don't, but thats just my opinion.

Ooooh, you threatened to kick my ass over the internet? Wow, tough guy. You still pirate which still makes you a scumbag, and I would say it to your face without a second thought (mainly due to the fact that I'm 250 and have studied 3 different grappling arts over the last 8 years and have been bouncing for nearly one year )

If you pirate, you are scum. Its that simple and is an opinion I have never been hesitant to relay on any board, whether it be here or PVG. Don't get angry at me for calling it as I see it. If your so pissed about what you are, stop breaking the law and hurting the industry. Maybe you'll feel a little better about yourelf.

With that, I will bid you all ado.

I have yet to mod my Xbox, nor do I intend to (because I try to maintain a life), but I don't oppose pirating video games.

If you look at the gaming industry, you might note that gaming hasn't been all that great over the last few years. In fact, I remember having a hell of a lot more fun back in the "old school" days, back when I was playing Mario Bros. 3 and Goldeneye for the first time.

Nowadays, we see sequel after sequel after used idea after used idea. It gets a little redundant, don't you think?

That's why I personally am picky with my games. I only invest in a game if it receives outstanding reviews, and if it looks like I'll have a lot of fun playing it.

However, I'm not going to condemn someone who wishes to play a game that's not highly innovative, but doesn't feel like dropping the 50 dollars to play it. That, to me, is logical. If the gaming industry doesn't want people to pirate their games, they should either sell sub-par, un-innovative, piles of crap (like Mario Sunshine) for less money then a standard, new and original game, or they should make something original.

YES, I am challenging game-makers to come up with original ideas.

I know a lot of people are going to yell at me for that, but is there really any reason for doing so?

Halo 2
Metroid Prime 2
Grand Theft Auto 5
Mario Sunshine
Resident Evil 4

Many of these titles are simply improvements upon their originals, and while I still would consider paying money for the majority of those, I completely can understand where someone might go, "hey, what the ****? San Andreas is more like GTA3: part 3."

Regarding old gaming, old games are hard to buy. You can use Ebay, or you can use an emulator. I emulate old games: I won't lie. I think emulating old games is a good thing for a gamer, as it opens them up to the classics that started gaming.

I, personally, don't condemn you for emulating. I suppose it is wrong, but I won't give the makers of games that much credit until I start to see more originality in the market - because let's face it: Sonic 2 for Genesis was a hell of a lot more fun then Sonic 2 for dreamcast.
