Terrorist bid to build bombs in mid-flight: Intelligence reveals dry runs of new threat to blow up airliners

Islamic militants have conducted dry runs of a devastating new style of bombing on aircraft flying to Europe, intelligence sources believe.

The tactics, which aim to evade aviation security systems by placing only components of explosive devices on passenger jets, allowing militants to assemble them in the air, have been tried out on planes flying between the Middle East, North Africa and Western Europe, security sources say.

...The... Transportation Security Administration issued an urgent memo detailing new threats to aviation and warning that terrorists in teams of five might be planning suicide missions to hijack commercial airliners, possibly using common items...such as cameras, modified as weapons.

...Components of IEDs [improvised explosive devices]can be smuggled on to an aircraft, concealed in either clothing or personal carry-on items... and assembled on board. In many cases of suspicious passenger activity, incidents have taken place in the aircraft's forward lavatory.

It's very clever, if only they could put their cunning to good, peaceful uses.

Argh, they say before a Muslim of person of that ethnic background is going to commit a "homicide" bombing of some kind they are normally clean shaven and dressed nicely so that when they get to "heaven" where ever that may be the virgins will accept them.

These terrorist are getting smarter as security heightens! This doesn't mean I'm living my life in fear. I'll just have to live each day like it's the last, like I've been doing since 9/11.

What if there was an anti terrorist group out there. Sort of like the DEA, the organization would have people pretend to be terrorist and bust them. Sure it would take guts, but its worth it. Unless we already have something like that.

Very easy to say when you're living in Canada. Once you're attacked and people you know and care about die, we'll see how your feelings change.

I'm not scared of the terrorists. They've only done one MAJOR thing to the US but haven't done anything to us since then (as in, on our soil). I know about the USS Cole attack and the '93 bombing, but those weren't as big as the one in '01. Until the government stops giving us "an attack may occur but the info is so vague, we don't know whats going on". I can understand they don't want secrets shard to the public because of possible chaos, but when you keep hearing that over and over, you don't care anymore, IMO.

Terrorists can get as smart as they want. Until they can find a way to actually get past security and pull off a plan, no worries for me. *sits back and looks at the cornfields outside with no worries*

I remember watching a news story about people in small towns being afraid of a terrorist attack. This whole alert system has whipped everyone into a frenzy. Even those who aren't near anything worth bombing.

You act like security is actually good. The only part of the airport that is remotely safe is the secured area, but there's just as many people out in ticketing. Why bother trying to sneak onto a plane and blow it up when you can bust out an automatic weapon and kill more people waiting in line for tickets and security. Not like our security guards are any good and would be able to stop them.

I wasn't trying to say our security is all great and everything. I know it has flaws but you can't help it. You never know what the employees in the airport are doing when not working. I know our security isn't perfect and I know terrorists are trying ways to get past it again but until they can pull it off, like I said, I'm not worrying.

Get like 4 trained guys and they could go on a rampage in an airport. Think security can stop em? Ya, right. You could easily level the ticketing crowd, take out security, and then mow down the rest of the airport. Could they stop that? Probably not.

Best they can do is spot a gun someone is dumb enough to leave in their carry-on bag. God forbid they use it.
