Nintendo DS Ideas
Ok, suppose you were a developer, and you just got your hands on a DS development kit. You knew you had to do something super creative to make use of the touch screen. What would you ideas be?
here are some of mine, off the bat... still thinking though.
-mario tennis DS where you used the D pad to move your guy, and used the stylus to swing.
-baseball game where the bottom screen is a first person view of the batter at the plate, and the top screen is the field. when the ball is pitched, you have to hit it with the touchscreen.
-the airhockey demo was awesome
-super monkey ball with a touch screen. the course spans both top and bottom display.
matter of fact, you could get sega to make that one big game.. you know how SMB has mini games! yeah, sega are you reading this?
all those would be freaking awesome IMO

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
as far as i read the DS can only do 3d on one screen at a time. so that would make it tough for monkey ball on both screens. even then only the bottom is a touch screen.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
Here is what nintendo says about the ds screens.
Quote:
Two LCD screens offer one of the most groundbreaking game-play advances ever developed: experiencing a game from two perspectives at once. Imagine the possibilities. In a racing game, drivers might see their own vehicle's perspective on one screen and an overall track view on the other. In a role-playing game, the action could take place on the first screen while the second provides a reference for a player's tools inventory. Game play also could use both screens at once, offering a giant boss for heroes to defeat. In the future, games could be created allowing users to play games on one screen while text messaging other DS users on the other. Each 3-inch screen can reproduce a true 3-D view and is backlit to assure comfortable play in any lighting condition.

it has two processors, i dont see why 2 3d views would be a problem

Isnt one processor more of a 3D processor, and the other a processor similar the the GBA processor? I know for a fact one processor is quite a bit more powerful then the other one...so it will be obvious which one they use 3D on.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
yea. im still pretty sure it can only do 3d on one screen at a time.
It can decide which to use, like metroit uses the bottom others use top. but i dont THINK i can do 3d on both screens. they can each can do 3d, but they dont say each at the same time.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
What they mean is that each screen can reproduce 3-D but not at the same time. One is using the ARM9 processor (full 3D) and the other is using the ARM7 processor (GBA). So each dev can either put 3D on which screen but not 3D on both at the same time.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
I still think they should upgrade the processors... now that we know what the PSP can do.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
A Pokémon game would be cool, where the upper screen shows full 3D battles while the lower screen lists your Pokémon, stats, and items and stuff, and maybe a GPS to show where you are at all times in the Pokémon world.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
I'm with Crash on the whole I'm-pretty-sure-both-screens-can-display-3D-simultaneously thing.
I've seen the top screen displaying 3D(submarine demo, Mario 64 X 4, etc), while the bottom screen was used to display other stuff. It's clear that the bottom screen uses the processor that's capable of handling 3D and touch functions(Metroid). Based on that, I feel relatively safe concluding that BOTH processors are "edaquately" capable of 3D, and therefore, CAN display 3D on both screens simultaneously IF needed. (I also don't believe there's much disparity between the two processor other than one having extra logic functions for the touch screen" )
As for Ideas...
(hmm, I'd already been long considering posting a thread on that... I might still want to later on, so I'd just be spoiling it for myself.)
LoL, I read in another forum someone suggesting you can have a roach-killer game where roaches run across the screen and you can smash them with your thum. Hahaha, how silly!
... ... I'd play it...

i'll try and look for the link where i read it. but im pretty much garenteeing it only does 3d on 1 screen at a time.
one is a 3d processor and one is a 2d. It can pick what screen to display which one at. Its not set one processor to one screen. the 3d one can use top or bottom. If it was capible of doing both 3d at once, then im pretty sure nintendo woulda shown it doing such.
but i shall look for the link later tonight.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
I'll try and explain it as best as I can. Either screen CAN show 3D but only 1 processer (ARM9) on DS can display the 3D image. The ARM7 (GBA processor) is used on the screen that isnt being used for 3D. Both screens can show 3D but the processor can only do 3D on one screen at a time. There are tricks with the GBA processor to make it semi-3D but it wont look as good as the ARM9 on the DS.
But me and Null are correct and have explained as best as we can

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
So far, Nintendo has yet to release detailed 3D specs. Many people were surprised at the system's performance in the first place because they thought they knew where to gauge its power. I've been hearing about this combination of a GBA processor and a new Arms processor, but I still don't believe there's any disparity between the two chips besides one having more logic gates for new features like touch screen.
(I also find it a bit impractical to have such a varying power between processors especially when you intend to introduce gaming enhancements like dual camera views. Also remember that talking about Arms processors without fine details can be meaningless.. I can't remember, but I believe there's an Arms-9 in N-gage too.. if it's indeed true, then well...point made).
Finally...
"[i]Each 3-inch screen can reproduce a true 3-D view and is backlit to assure comfortable play in any lighting condition."
http://www.nintendo.com/e3_2004/ds/ds_overview.jsp
being that the screen isn't what's responsible for the 3D illusion, that seems to imply that each processor(tied to either screen) can produce "true" 3D.
Of course, nothing I posted was 100% concrete, just what I thought to be practical and what I concluded to be solid implications. But hey, I'd be glad if I someone link me to some detailed and factual info and clear this whole thing up.

Re: Nintendo DS Ideas
I just want my game where one of the screens is the rear view and the other one is the car and stuff. I'll be hapily blocking the cars behind me all the race.
