Xbox makes quiet debut
The Asahi Shimbun
Throwing down the gauntlet to Japanese rivals Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and Nintendo Co., U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp. on Friday started selling its Xbox game console at Japanese stores.
Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates attended a countdown ceremony at a shop in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward ahead of the 7 a.m. launch of the console, which simultaneously hit shelves at outlets in Tokyo, Osaka and other major cities.
Retail industry sources said the launch did not attract as many customers as hoped, partly because of the product's price, which is about 5,000 yen to 10,000 yen higher than rival products.
There are also not enough games to be played on the console to stimulate strong interest, they said.
``I guess consumers are in a wait-and-see mode,'' an employee of a major retailer said. ``It was a quiet launch.''
But the new game console, touted for its high-tech features and which has sold 1.5 million units in North America since its debut in November, remains tough competition for Sony and Nintendo, which square off against Microsoft with their respective products, PlayStation 2 and GameCube.
The two rivals are gearing up for the summer, when the introduction of a host of new games is expected to boost the popularity of Xbox.
According to Microsoft sources, the company put 250,000 units of Xbox on sale initially.
It plans to increase the number depending on how fast the first batch sells.
Although Gates targets Japan as the world's biggest video game market, analysts say the small number of units seems too conservative, considering the 9 million units of PlayStation 2 and 1.3 million units of GameCube that have sold here.
``They may be trying to sell fewer of the products to make it seem scarce, as a way of stimulating interest,'' said Mamoru Nishiyama of Dentsu Institute of Human Studies.
