[Perfect Stu]

Note: I have not seen all of the movies released this past year...not even close. But from those I HAVE seen, I've given out some awards.

Picture of the Year

1. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
the final and arguably best installment of what will go down as the greatest film trilogy of all time. ultimate specticle of visuals and sound, acting and storytelling. a true epic for the ages.

2. Lost in Translation
so creative, and masterfully pieced together. a simple story of two fairly simple people made into one of the most enjoyable films I've seen in years. unparalelled acting and excellent direction

3. NARC
independant film, co-produced by Tom Cruise. the story of a narcotics officer re-investigating a 6+ month old murder case. Jason Patric teams up with Ray Liotta to display a true-to-life, gritty, and interesting view of the life of narcotics

Honorable mention: Seabiscuit

Best Actor, leading role

TIE: Bill Murray, Lost in Translation/Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl

Tough choice here. Murray is terribly convincing in his role as a washed-up middle aged actor who finds himself in Tokyo doing a whisky advertisement. You can see the subtle transition of his character throughout the film, and become somewhat emotionally attached.

Johnny Depp threw it all on the line and created the role of a pirate who is simply undescribable. Witty, but clueless...intelligent, but clumsy. And definately humorous. He manages to pull it all together, takes a stranglehold of the movie and somehow makes it all work.

Best Actress, leading role

Naomi Watts, 21 grams

A painfully ambitious role of an emotionally destroyed woman who has lost her family. Watts seemed to own every line she had, every move she made. Superb performance...simply superb.

Best Actor, supporting role

Cris Cooper, Seabiscuit

Robbed of an Oscar nomination IMO, Cooper plays an elderly horse-lover who is asked to train a troubled racehorse to win against all odds. His character is quiet, but passionate and dedicated. 100% convincing, you'd think you were watching a documentary.

Best Actress, supporting role

Scarlett Johansson, Lost in Translation

Such a loveable character. Recently married but terribly lonely and confused, she wanders around Tokyo to search for appreciation of culture, and comfort in others. Surprisingly stunning chemistry between her character and Murray's.

Anyone-would-like-it Movie of the Year

Finding Nemo

A clownfish in search of his lost son. *doubletakes* A clownfish in search of his lost son? Finding Nemo takes the most basic of premises and throws together a fun aquatic adventure full of character, eye-candy, humor and charm. Best family film in YEARS.

as horrible as the commercials were for the last samurai...the movie is GREAT! at first i didn't want to go see it at all....but after i saw it...man was it great. anyhoo...go see it if it's still out in theatres somewhere...if not...guess your only choice would be to wait.

Here is The Germanator's "list of movies I saw in the theatres this year and actually didn't walk out thinking, or saying, 'man, I wasted $8.50'"

City of God: I walked into this one not expecting much at all...Mainly because I was on a date and we just sort of decided to go to the independent theatre in Philly for the heck of it. What a pleasant surprise it was. The film takes place in Brazil (based on a true story) and follows the path of two young teenagers. One decides to take the path of a gang leader, one becomes a photographer. Lots of drugs are dealt, people killed, ya know, the good stuff, but all done very realistically and raw. Great direction, great characters, great story, great movie. I need to rent it now.

Spellbound: A very interesting and cute documentary about kids who were involved with spelling bee competitions. The different methods taken by both the parents and children in their training was one of the most intruiging aspects of the film, from the strict dad who makes his son study 20,000 words a day to the seemingly clueless parents who let their daughter pace herself. Enjoyable throughout, I say to you, "don't miss(spell) this one!"

28 Days Later: How can you not like a zombie movie? Fun summer movie to see. Very cool shots of an empty London, some thrills, some fast-ass zombies = cool movie. Some of the plot I could have done without, but the music-driven action sequences made it more than worthwhile.

Kill Bill (vol.1) Quentin Tarantino knows how to do it. Don't **** around with dialogue, plot, story, etc. Give me some blood, give me some crazy ass anime sequences, give me hundreds of Japanese limbs all over the place. One the better film-going experiences I've had in a long time. Can't remember one part when I didn't have a smile on my face. Look forward to volume 2.

Others I don't feel like talking about much: American Splendor (Very good), Elf (Will Ferrell is funny), A Mighty Wind(Christopher Guest movie, not as good as 'Best in Show', but still good), Finding Nemo (Cant' go wrong with Pixar, nice classic comedy)

i wanted to see Kill Bill (vol. 1)

but im the kind of guy that if i dont see it in the opening weekend then i see it on DVD

These were just my favorite movies of the year, I never said anything about these movies being oscar-worthy.

I agree with your awards for Pirates and RotK... Finding Nemo is definately a cute movie. I haven't seen the others so I don't really have an opinion.
