Urk, it's been a while since I last touched mandrake, here's what I can remember off the yop of my head (and yeah, I agree that having the default MDK desktop as KDE sucks for us Gnome fans).
First of all, I first used the graphical login, which allowed me to choose what GDE I wanted (ie Gnome) - I'm assuming 9.0 doesn't have this.
Right, IIRC go into Mandrake Control Centre in X, and there should be a config panel in there called Boot or X86 config or something. Somewhere in there should be an option to turn off graphical login, and have a text based login (seems to me like you've already enabled this anyway), so that on login you'll just get the command prompt and have to type "startx" to launch your GDE.
If the problem is that X starts up but either KDE starts or neither KDE nor GNOME start, then look for a file called .xinitrc or (possibly) .Xclients in your home directory. Edit it with a text editor. You want to remove everything from it and end up with just this in it: exec gnome-session. Save this file, and then retry startx.
Or you can use vi or whatever to uncomment whichever desktop you choose to run.
You could also type "start" and then tab through all your various options, this works in RedHat, dunno about MDK.
