Default Microsoft Wants ATI for Xbox 2

Quote:
ANALYSTS AT THE Dundee Securities Corporation said today that Canadian company ATI was "well positioned" to pick up future Xbox business.
Obviously, Microsoft is trying to lever Nvidia and ATI against each other – both of them being suppliers, or would be suppliers.

It’s sort of a Sendo thing, or maybe a Zsoft thing, all over again, we suspect.

David Hodgson, a senior analyst at ATI, reports that the Vole will do "everything possible" to compete against the Playstation 3, although Microsoft is not well known for designing chips in the past.

Dundee said it believed the GPU supplier to Microsoft’s next console – the Xbox 2, right? – will be compensated through some kind of Byzantine licensing deal.

According to Hodgson, Microsoft is trying to drive down the BOM (bill of materials) so it can sell its future product cheaper.

But we wonder who is playing hardball here. Nvidia faced off Microsoft before. Will ATI crumble for the extra revenues the next Xbox will bring?

We suspect Microsoft thinks its power is as it was before. Tell its suppliers what to do, and wait for the fallout... µ

* LET DUNDEE not forget that ArtX now belongs to ATI. It was instrumental in the Nintendo Gamecube’s genesis, and know how to design ideal console software, allegedly.

Wouldn't it be funny if they both turned MS down?

Highly doubt it, but if it did happen they'd probably either:

1) Make their own version of a video card by ripping off either ATI or nVidia and calling it their own. Hey, it happened to Xerox!

2) MS will buy ATI or nVidia (but they'd have some serious anti-trust issues if they did)

By the way Gekko, considering you OWN an XBox you should be thinking a little more positive

Also, AMD was initially supposed to do the first video caard, but nVidia approached Bill Gates himself and the change was made. See IGN for the source.

Yet another way M$ has to pay with money to get things to come to them. But hey, ATI wantd to compete against "PS3" at all costs, so maybe they will make a chip for Nintendo's next console and a diff. chip for "XBox 2". And with M$ saying they want to be the first with a new console out, they would get the lower end chip while Nintendo gets the higher end. But thats at least 2-3 years away so I'm not gonna worry yet.

Wouldn't it be funny if they made the chip for Cube and xbox.
But I agree with Gameking they are most likely content with Nintendo.

Since when were ATI and Nintendo a couple? Nintendo went with ArtX, and they just happened to be bought with ATI. Nintendo and ATI aren't a partnership for anything other than Gamecube.

Good point Gekko, and why would ATI be "content" with Nintendo when they could have both Nintendo and XBox and sell twice as many chips?

Exactly. Gamecube can hold it's own graphically in games programmed specifically for Gamecube. You don't think ATI would love showing off Rogue Leader next to Halo?

I don't think ATI and Nintendo are unhappy, considering how ATI is bragging using Zelda at CES, but 2 is better than 1.

Hope you guys have heard about the Nvidia GeForce FX. It might very well be the most powerful graphics card, not a giant leap past the ATI Radeon 9700 PRO though. ATI stands a better chance but I doubt Nvidia will go out as quietly as 3Dfx. *moment of silence*

Yeah, but probably by the time Xbox 2 comes out there will be another batch of video graphics cards available.

By the way, welcome to the forums.
