Default Top 10 Games of the Generation

(So Far)

This was something that was discussed on Twitter and another website, so I figured would get GT's opinion on it. Based on reviews (using GameRanking because I can't be arsed to go back and forth with MetaCritic [unless it also ranks all games?] ), these are the top 10 games released so far this generation in order. I may also add that going to eliminate cross platform games after the first inclusion.

1) Super Mario Galaxy
2) Super Mario Galaxy 2
3) Grand Theft Auto IV
4) Uncharted 2
5) The Orange Box
6) Mass Effect 2
7) Red Dead Redemption
8) Bioshock
9) Littlebigplanet
10) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

I think all consoles are well represented. Ps3/360 may have more or less if you count repeats (GTA IV, The Orange Box and RDR are represented on both)

So which have you played?
Do you agree with their rankings?
Which would you remove?
What do you think is missing?

~Edit~
And now find it on MetaCritic, let's see how their list compares.

1) GTA IV
2) Super Mario Galaxy 2
3) Super Mario Galaxy
4) Bioshock
5) The Orange Box
6) Mass Effect 2
7) Uncharted 2
8) Twilight Princess
9) Little Big Planet
10) RDR

So the same 10 games, but a completely different order.

I don't really agree with the order of ranking, but it's based off of averages - so enh.

I'd put LittleBigPlanet and Mass Effect 2 higher on the list.
I'd also include Rock Band somewhere there, and maybe Wii PSports Resort. But those two suggestions are based off of replayability, funability and basicially-first-doneability.

I think MGS4 is the best game of this generation, so I have to disagree with the list. I don't even have one-by-one arguements for each game, it's just my fav isn't up there. lol

Based on the Gameranking scale, MGS 4 will be 14th on the year.

And MetaCritic, and 14th on MetaCritic as well.

Well, yeah it goes without saying you would put your favorite game on top. ;P

Anyhow, fun with figures.

Of the top 10 games, I own/owned 9 of them (Bioshock is the only one I got rid of)

LBP is the only one I don't own, but I've played it.

So with that said, based on the top 10, I would
-Drop Super Mario Galaxy 2, don't get me wrong it is a truly amazing game, and maybe my favorite this gen, but with SMG already there, I don't get the sense in having both since it is a bit unfair.
-My feelings on GTA IV have been shared numerous times, let's just say I wouldn't include it on the list.
-I like Twilight Princess but it isn't a proper game from this gen, even if was mostly released during this gen.

So my list would break down

-Super Mario Galaxy
-Uncharted 2
-The Orange Box
-Mass Effect 2
-RDR
-Little Big Planet
-Bioshock

But that's based only on using those core 10 titles

My personal top 5 would look more like
-Super Mario Galaxy 2 (And 1 to save room)
-Batman Arkham Asylum
-Uncharted 2
-The Orange Box
-New Super Mario Bros Wii

Wanted to try something else, (I like looking at numbers, sue me)

Top 10 Games Based on Sales (using VGChartz) Along with their review avg

(~)1 Wii Sports- 63.78 Million Copies (MC: 76, GR: 76.22%)
1) Wii Play 27.49 Million Copies (MC: 58, GR: 61.72%)
2) Wii Fit 22.57 Million (MC: 80, 81.20%)
3) Mario Kart Wii 22.47 Mil (MC: 82, GR: 82.02%)
4) Modern Warfare 2 19,24 Mil (MC: 94, GR: 93.37%)
5) Wii Sports Resort 16.18 Mil (MC: 80, GR: 83.00%)
6) New Super Mario Bros Wii 15.07 Mil (MC: 87, GR: 88.12%)
7) Wii Fit Plus 12.95 Million (MC: 80 GR: 80.83%)
8) Halo 3 11.07 Million (MC: 94, GR: 93.54%)
9) Super Smash Bros Brawl 9.52 Million (MC: 93, GR: 92.75%)
10) Super Mario Galaxy 8.72 Million (MC: 97, GR: 97.46%)

Some general notes, Wii Sports is a tough game to really include since for the most part it comes bundled with the console except in Japan so it is a game that has been sold separately but number is highly inflated due to being included in the package.

Modern Warfare 2 is the only game on the list in which versions were combined. It was only done that way since came across both before hitting number 10. If you combine multiple versions Modern Warfare will also be in the top 10, but the first version of any MW is outside of the top 10.

The same with GTA IV actually.

I could have went either way with Wii Fit Plus since it really serves as an expansion pack for the original Wii Fit, so if you want to combine numbers or whatever feel free to do it.

The only game to be on both the highest rated and best selling games list is Super Mario Galaxy.

And seeing some of the gaps in the GameRankings/MetaCritic numbers is interesting, but already knew they didn't all count the same review/use different ways to find numerically values for scales.

My list would probably be:

1. Fable II (surprised that's not on there)
2. Mass Effect (first one)
3. Halo 3
4. Assassin's Creed II
5. New Super Mario Bros Wii
6. Modern Warfare 2
7. Team Fortress 2 (although I guess the Orange Box would supersede this)
8. Twilight Princess
9. Dragon Age Origins
10. Pokemon SoulSilver (can we count handhelds?)

So yeah, I guess I mainly think Fable II and Dragon Age are the big ones that are missing. Although Dragon Age was really buggy and the story kind of disappointing in parts, so maybe it doesn't deserve to be on the list.

I would probably be willing to replace it after I get around to playing Mario Galaxy.

And Assassin's Creed II is just such an original, beautiful, fun game. Definitely deserves a spot on the list.

And I'm sure my opinion on Mass Effect is rare. I actually think Mass Effect 2 is probably the better game, better looking, and without the bad Mako missions (although mining was perhaps an even worse replacement). I enjoyed the first one more for two reasons:

1. The "main story" was more of a focus. I got tired of the recruit person/do loyalty mission pattern.

2. The areas of Mass Effect 1 felt less artificial. So many of the ME2 areas seem like they were designed just to be in a video game.
