They look like that. In this case, blue is low, green is medium, and red is high. So blue + green = cyan and green + red = yellow, and you have all the colors they show. In this particular case, it's showing spots where people died. So the red area is responsible for the most deaths on the entire map.
They're a neat way to visualize statistics. Not sure why they release them to the public, since most people who play the game probably realize they die in the red area often anyways. I really just think they're fun to look at, and since they already exist, they just show them to the users.
I have heard developers using them for balancing, since it's immediately apparent if all the action in your game is hovering around one side of the map. I just can't find any sources confirming that. Google swamps me with the news that Bungie released Halo 3 heatmaps, and a bunch of garbage.
So if you guys have seen them before in any games you play, that would be awesome. I count on you guys to play lots of games and read the news, I'm sure someone has come across them
