First off, I'd like to state that this has nothing to do with Piracy. Playing Wii backups has been possible for a long time, and this development is specific to being able to execute Wii homebrew (ie, sign your own code).

If you've been following the scene (or watched that video), you're aware that any homebrew running on Wii hardware up to this point has been running in Gamecube mode. This essentially means that the Wii shuts down all of the bits and bobs that make it a Wii. The extra RAM, new CPU/VPU functions, USB ports, Wiimote, flash memory - the most exciting reasons for wanting to make Wii homebrew - are unavailable to homebrew developers. With these hacks in place, Wii Linux ports will immediately become available, USB ports will become available, making the Wii one of the most desirable media machines available. Homebrew games, emulators, applications, etc will all be made possible.
It is an exciting time for any DIY'er.
