Sony cuts PS3 price by 20%

In an unprecedented move, Sony has cut the price of its Playtstation 3 in what looks to be the fiercest console battle ever.

wow...i seriously didn't expect a price drop at this point. and 20% is a lot...much more competitively priced.

Why? Why cut the price now? They're only going to have 100,000 units there anyway. Are they seriously worried that those won't sell out at the higher price? Hmmmm............ What do you think, Mr. Horse?

i think the bigger news then the price is that the lower end PS3 model now has HDMI.

We don't know that yet. The president was addressing Japenese media at a Japanese trade show in Japan, so they probably wouldn't have given a damn had he said "oh, this also applies to North America and other territories".

Though it is possible that it'll only happen in Japan. Apparently Japanese consumers bitched even more than we did.

EDIT: "UPDATE: SCEA told 1UP that the price drop in Japan for the 20 GB version of the PlayStation 3 is exclusive to that territory and that the scheme for the U.S. pricing of the console would remain identical. $499 for the 20GB version of the console and $599 for the 60GB SKU. However, as previously reported, both versions now have HDMI."

Ok so I guess we're screwed. Why didn't you guys cry and whine as much as Japan? Damn.

So it there no difference now between the 20GB version and the 60GB version except for HDD space? No, that cant be right...

Is the 60GB one wireless or something? More memory card adapters?

*and yes, Dyne. this is bad news. this makes Sony much much worse. you're on a roll.

i remember there being a couple other things. but as of right now with this news... i'd say for sure the lower priced version is without a doubt the better version.

before it was pretty much the worthless version because without an HDMI plug, it might not even be able to play Blu ray movies, or at least not at full resolution. now that it has hdmi, i dont think any of the other things it might be missing would be worth spending the extra money.

so you're right...the big news for Japan was the lowered price, and then HDMI which makes it a better value too...but the HDMI news is big for us NA's and Euros. Makes the lower priced one a much better option.

My post was sourced by Darkmaster a bit after. I was referring to the play-by-play notes of the conference and the 1up article. I never once antagonized anyone or used heavy sarcasm. Funnily enough, you did. So cut it out.
