Framerates of old (N64) games
BaB and me were discussing the framerate of Perfect Dark (which is in my experience ok) and Turok and some other games.
They make us sick these days. Why didn't we notice this when we played them years ago??

Because back then it was the norm.
Thats like saying why didnt people realize pong sucked, opposed to a marvel of technology.

Re: Framerates of old (N64) games
Well I got on to Perfect Dark a little late (back when Gamecube first came out and I was bored) and I hated the frame rate. Seriously, it was just an elaborate Goldeneye engine, and Goldeneye ran fine! On top of that, it was using the expansion pack. It had no reason to be slow, yet it was.
But I can and do go back to Goldeneye a lot and the framerate is never an issue. It seems to be a solid 30 fps. Sure, it slows down when you explode 10 remote mines, but that makes sense.

Re: Framerates of old (N64) games
I always thought PD's Framerate could've been better off but Counter-Op playing was just completely horrid in the framerate department for no reason.
I hope Nintendo can put it on Rev and at the very least make it an always smooth 30fps or more

I like the 4 fps you get on old NES games with busy screens.

That's not the point. I'm asking why we get sick of them. As in dizzy, ill...
The first times I played Turok, there was no problem. When I played it years later, it was terrible and I got a headache.

Re: Framerates of old (N64) games
Probably because we are so used to 30-60fps now, when we go back to 10fps, the change is very noticable to our eyes.

I always hated having to have an expansion pack for Perfect Dark.
I never did get one.

Re: Framerates of old (N64) games
No expansion pack meant no Majora's Mask and no Perfect Dark. Nobody should have cared about DK64.

Re: Framerates of old (N64) games
I suspet the answer has something to do with use. At one point, I actually thought the controlls for Goldeneye rocked.
I am going to try to emulate some of my N64 games, just the ones I have lying around. And see how they compare on PC vs. Console. First a foremost, my controller is superior to the N64 one. And second, I can run Goldeneye at a steady 60 FPS.

When my friend and I were playing Sonic 3 (on Sonic Mega Collection disc) a couple weeks ago, he continually remarked how the bright colors and the emerald stages made him dizzy and made his eyes hurt.

Re: Framerates of old (N64) games
I used to play Turok for about 10 minutes before I had to turn it off. Everything bobbed. The view, the weapon, the muzzle.. For the first time in my life I thought I was going to throw up playing a game.
Banjo-Tooie had a low framerate as well. Towards the end, it got so bad it was almost unplayable. Couldn't finish the game a second time.

I've been doing that, I've got a PC controller very similar to a PS2 controller and it's actually very fun to play. I've played a ton of PD, and if I can find a few more controllers, I'm thinking about playing multiplayer. But how do you run GE at 60 FPS? The emulator I use emulates everything, even the framerate, so I play PD just as I would on an N64..

Re: Framerates of old (N64) games
I know that there are some GE and PD mods for Half-Life, but I never got around to try them...
