PSP: I'm submitting
So, I calculated how much I make next week, and.. ooh, wow. <3
So anyways, I have two options: filling out my gamecube library completely, or buying a PSP. The thing is, I really like the PSP, and it looks hot as hell. But I could care less for the games on it.
Persuade/Dissuade me. I'm leaning towards Metal Gear Ac!d or Lumines, but I don't know. I usually like non-turn-based Japanese games, and I'm a bit iffy about replay value here.
What about Hot Shots Golf? I'm a huge fanboy of Mario Golf. Is it any different?
What are some of the things I can do with a PSP?

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
I'd just wait until there's some games you're actually interested in before buying the PSP. Besides, there could, possibly (anything is possible..), be a price drop between now and then...

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
Lumines, Metal Gear Acid, Hot Shots Golf, Ridge Racer, and Wipeout Pure are all excellent titles for the PSP. There are a few others as well, but I've mainly played those 5.
If you're really into titles like Rez, Gitaroo Man, Space Channel 5, etc. then some would consider Lumines worth the price of admission alone. It's really awesome.
Metal Gear Acid is kind of a love it or hate it. I love Metal Gear, I love strategy games, so I love Metal Gear Acid, simple as that.
You can't go wrong with Hot Shots Golf, and if you're into racing games then you must check out Ridge Racer and/or Wipeout Pure.
If you want to go beyond games, you can pick up a 512MB or 1GB san disk memory duo and download a crap ton of music and pictures, or a few hours of TV shows, movies, etc. It's a great little device to have if you're willing to dish out the money.

Awesome. Buy a PSP because it looks good and just stare at it. Sweet, mind if I join you? We can wirelessly connect and stare at our PSPs together!
If you don't like the games, don't waste your money on the hardware. PSP is not a collectors item, there's no reason to own it if you don't plan on playing it.
You paid $199 for that Gamecube you have, and now you want to pay $249 for a system with games you don't care for? Why? It's a waste of money.
I think you would be better off saving your money rather than buying a PSP. Once you buy the PSP, a couple games, a bigger memory card so you can realize it isn't a MP3 player, maybe waste some money on buying a movie just to say you've tried it, and you just spent a lot of money. Better off saving it for an Xbox 360. At least then you can sit around and change faceplates all day.
Seriously, $250 is ridicules. If you really wanted it, I'd say buy it. If not, wait. It'll drop in price. I want one too every time I go into a store, but I'm not spending $250 on a system that suffers from poor battery life and defective square buttons only because it has a big screen and pretty graphics. I'm more than sick of Metal Gear, and Hot Shots Golf. It's the reason I don't play my PS2. The only game that even peaked my interest is Death Jr, and I'll grab it for a couple bucks off eBay in a couple years.
Xbox 360 is coming out this fall, and despite how much I make fun of it, it will be the best system, hands-down for a year after its launch. I'll be playing my games in 720p over the best online service consoles have ever seen. If I'
m going to spend my money on a game system with horrible games, I'd rather go Xbox 360, not PSP.

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
If you want a PSP for its games, prolly should wait. if your planning on running emulators or anything. might want to thinka bout picking it up before they up the ones they're selling in stores to a higher version, if they havnt already.

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
Gekko loses. I bought it.
Somewhere, Kyuzo is applauding rautiously.
I bought it with Lumines, a 256mb card, a USB cable, and a leather pouch.
Anyways, thanks Darkmaster and those of you whom tried to dissuade me. I do feel kind of bad about dropping $500 canadian, but hell, when you make a lot of money, don't own a car, and you have no loans to pay off, it really isn't that much.

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
Hot Shots Golf is my personal favorite PSP game so far... By far...
Yeah though you still prolly should've at least waited
But Null as for the emulator comment, the only PSPs that can run any kind of emulators out there right now are ones running on the firmware version 1.0 (I think is the one)... And unfortunately, the only ones that could possibly have that are unupdated Japanese PSPs from around launch time...
all US PSPs come with version 1.1, or whatever, which has some kind of... thing in it... that does stuff... and won't allow it to play the emulators that are out...
But I've heard it's just a matter of time before someone gets around it, I'm keepin my fingers crossed...

I watched him buy it. With my eyes. Haven't seen it in action yet though.
Gotta let me try Lumines, dude.

But thats exactly my point. with each new version of firmware, its probably going to be harder to do. or at least take longer. the earlier version you have, the better chances you have of them making em work on yours.
1.5 will be cracked soon enough, sony released updates to 1.51 recently for a unknown 'security' fix. perhaps they know of a way people can make em run on 1.5's so they patched it. who knows. But i will never update my PSP unless i know they can run on the version im updating to.

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
I'm still hooked on Wipeout Pure and Darkstalkers. Star Wars Episode I, II, III are supposedly going to be released on UMD simultaneously with III's DVD release in about half a year.
And Gekko... do you own a PSP? The thing doesn't suffer from any type of battery life. It has the expected battery life of what a machine like this can handle. I've listened to my mp3's all throughout my sleep with it still playing in the morning... I have a lump sum of mp3's in there... albeit it'll be almost dead in the morning... but thats a lot of hours. Playing a game without it jacked in, I can get in a good 4 hours. And I hardly find myself playing portably for more than 4 hours..... and thats one thing people over exaggerate.... people think because it's not as lasting as a DS or GB, means it has sucky battery life. But who honestly plays portably for 10 hours straight? Aside from long flights, there'll be a time where you'll eventually charge the thing.
PSP has sufficient battery life....it doesn't suck. And there is a Pelican Extended Battery out there that runs on 3 AAA batteries, making it's battery life up to 30 hours.... and it is a rechargable battery pack. Think about that? It's only $40.00 too.

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
No, I don't own a PSP as I clearly stated in the post you're replying to. I have read plenty of tests from various sources, including PS exclusive magazines who say its battery life sucks, and they actually did the tests.
I'm not interested in using PSP as an MP3 player, it would be a very expensive downgrade. I would use it for playing games, and all the tests indicate the battery life is horrible. It might not be a big deal for you, if you play it sitting in your house where you're free to charge it at your leisure. I could go out and buy extended batteries, and I'm sure Sony is more than planning on capitalizing on their poor product by releasing their own extended batteries to try and suck more money out of their customers. Excuse me for expecting a PlayStation Portable to actually be portable. If you want to go out and buy a PSP for $249 and then go spend more money on a extended battery, be my guest. Again, sorry for thinking I should get what I paid for.
In Iraq, I killed hundreds of hours playing my GBA SP and Nintendo DS. You think sitting in an observation post outside a hostile city provided me a chance to charge the thing whenever I wanted? This isn't the Playstation Mini, it's the Playstation Portable, and until it becomes portable, don't expect me to buy it.
Anything else in the world and this would be an over-priced product with poor performance, but since it's a video game system, everybody worships the stupid plastic box and you're insane if you don't fall in love with a 4.3" screen. Give me a break.

Re: PSP: I'm submitting
I was interested in the PSP when it first came out, but after a while I can see myself becoming very bored with it if there are no stellar games (I don't think there are any, as goes for DS).
At least the DS offers the touch screen which offers some fresh gameplay experiences. PSP atm seems like a portable PSX/2, which isn't what I really want

Perhaps you should put your money towards a car rather than wasting it on new videogame consoles.

Actually, I kind of regret buying a DS on launch. It's a cool portable, but right now there are very few games for it, and while there is a lot of stuff on the horizon, it's been collecting dust on my nightstand. I really wish Nintendo and Sony had just waited instead of rushing their two portables. Who knows, if they released them now, maybe both would have been substantially better, from a hardware and software standpoint.

I use my parents' cars. Whenever I need to get somewhere, there's always one free.
It would be even more of a stupid decision. But let's not get into that.
I'm going out today to get either Ridge Racers or Hot Shots Golf. Lumines is really fun, but usually it takes a while for me to get in the drift of puzzle games. (I'm still not confident at Mr. Driller.)
Anyways, it's a hot piece of console. I'm loving it.
